U23s Report: Crystal Palace 0-2 Bristol City

2 May 2017

Palace saw their Professional Development League campaign end in defeat as Bristol City ran out 2-0 victors at Selhurst Park, thanks to a Michael Phillips own goal and Opanin Edwards’ late strike.

It took 20 minutes for the game to see its first piece of goalmouth action when a low cross into the box caused Palace problems and Freddie Hinds tried to cleverly flick the ball goalwards, but Nikola Tavares was perfectly placed on the line to clear the danger.

Palace’s first opportunity came soon after when a long pass was neatly controlled by trialist Sam Barratt who sped down the left before getting a shot away which was comfortably dealt with by Jojo Wollacott in the Robins goal, however on 34 minutes the visitors took the lead in fortunate circumstances when another break down the left by Jonny Smith led to a teasing cross, and in an attempt to clear, Phillips inadvertently sliced it into his own net.

It nearly got worse for the Eagles a few minutes later when Joe Morrell slid in Edwards and only a good block by Kleton Perntreou prevented the lead being doubled before half-time.

At the break, Shaw introduced Everton trialist Delail Brewster and he nearly equalised four minutes after the restart when Levi Lumeka centred for the striker, however he couldn’t get enough contact onto his shot and a good opportunity went begging, but the chances kept coming for the hosts and Jonathan Benteke fired over when a corner was played low into the box.

The Eagles’ bright start to the second half continued and they had the ball in the net on 58 minutes through Lumeka after a free-kick was whipped into the box but it was disallowed for offside, and then good chances for Benteke and Andre Coker failed to trouble Wollacott.

However, those missed opportunities proved costly and City wrapped up the win with nine minutes to go, when Edwards raced onto a long ball down the right flank and burst into the box, and after taking a touch the attacker rifled the ball past a helpless Perntreou to claim all the points.
