Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate spoke ahead of this Saturday's home game with Tottenham Hotspur, revealing a hidden motivation behind his relentless effort.
When interviewed by Premier League Productions, Kouyate revealed who his most ardent fan really is.
"My dad watches every game I play," he explained. "Every time, if I play well, he’ll say, ‘no, no, you played badly,’ and everytime I play badly, he’ll say ‘yeah, you played bad.'"
The 28-year-old roaming across the pitch at Selhurst Park has become a familiar sight in recent weeks, and Kouyate went some way to explaining just what pushed him to making it at the level he's at.
"But this [his Father's criticisms] is good, he wants me everytime to push myself. He tells my mother, ‘if I tell our son he’s playing good, he’ll go and do nothing!’. I like that he pushes me everyday to work hard. Everything I do on the field, I want to do my best for my Dad.”
Turning his attention to Spurs, Kouyate outlined how tough the fixture will be but emphasised that he and the team are committed to getting the result the fans want.
"[Facing Tottenham] is not easy. They want to come here to win but we need to win this game because it'll be very tough. But this is one game for the fans, we know the importance of Saturday. We're going to do everything, everything to make everybody happy."
