After the Welsh international had been dominate early on he was delighted to see midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp’s goal separate the sides just before half time to set the Eagles on the road to their first three points of the campaign as the Palace number one looked back on the trip across London.
“We wanted to get off to a good start, we had a fantastic pre-season as everything went really well and training has been brilliant so to get a win today starts us off.
“They came at us early doors, we know that is there style of play and they keep the ball so well. They get it wide and then get a crucial ball in so for us it is a fantastic start and the boys defended brilliantly today plus I’m also delighted that Schlupp got his goal.
“It was a fantastic finish, particularly from that angle as well; the pace has beaten the goalkeeper.”
When asked for thoughts on his afternoon’s work he preferred to praise the team effort rather than select which save he would rank the best but he was certainly giving top marks to the Eagles fans that played their part in creating such a derby atmosphere.
“I couldn’t pick a favourite yet, this week I will sit down and look at my performance and I will go from there. It’s nice to hear the Palace fans like that, they are always loud and it’s special to play in front of them. They have been fantastic and being an away game they were louder than the Fulham fans in the other stands so now I just can’t wait to play at home.”
In front of the 31 year-old there was once again Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins at the heart of the Palace defence, the partnership have never played together in an Eagles defeat, the goalkeeper is a great admirer of their work.
“Hopefully it continues, it’s a great partnership as they play so well off each other with great communication. It has been a while that they have played together now and hopefully their run can continue.”
After the start last year it was so important that the visitors got off to a good beginning and they put that run from 17/18 season behind them so after the three points are now on the board the thoughts for Hennessey turn to the next Premier League outing at Selhurst Park.
“We don’t want that to happen ever again so obviously for us to come out and get the three points today was massive; having got them we can continue and onto the next game against Liverpool.”
