It was on this day eight years ago that Crystal Palace secured a landmark win against Newcastle United – and in some style, too.
Palace’s first win over Newcastle at Selhurst Park in over 31 years actually got off to a poor start for Alan Pardew’s Eagles, who fell behind to Papiss Cisse’s glancing header with 10 minutes gone.
Yet this was a Palace side spurred on by victories against the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, and their deficit lasted just four minutes as James McArthur equalised with a deflected effort – the Scot’s first goal of the season.
From there, Palace purred, strolling to victory as Yannick Bolasie lashed in on 17 minutes, Wilfried Zaha put them in charge five minutes before half-time, and McArthur and Bolasie both went on to complete braces.
The margin of victory could have been ever greater save for Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot, but it was enough to send Palace up to sixth in the table on a record-setting day in SE25.
