The No. 9s contribution came deep into stoppage time, as he won – and calmly converted – a 94th-minute penalty to rescue Palace from defeat and force extra time against Manchester United. From there, the young Eagles held their nerve to eventually triumph in a shootout and secure historic silverware.

Reflecting on the night, Casey admitted he was struggling to process what had unfolded across 120 minutes of relentless drama.

“I’m lost for words. It was a tough game and we gave our all. I don’t really know what to say because I think we gave everything out there.”

With Palace battling fatigue and cramp in the closing stages, Casey praised the collective spirit that kept the team going when it mattered most.

“Everyone started cramping, but we kept going as a team and we believed in ourselves, even when the odds were against us. It was a team effort – we just worked hard and that’s it.”

Even after forcing the shootout, Palace’s composure from the spot proved decisive, with a flawless set of penalties securing the trophy.

“We didn’t miss one. We were focused, and we’ve been practising penalties a lot in training. We showed it on the pitch today, and I think we deserved it.”

The turning point in normal time came when Casey latched onto Chuks Okoli’s forward pass and was brought down by Albert Mills, who was shown a red card for a professional foul. Despite initial appeals, a penalty was awarded – and under intense pressure in front of a packed Block E of the Holmesdale End, Casey delivered.

“I wasn’t nervous. I’ve been practising a lot, so I just stayed relaxed. The keeper was trying to get in my head a bit, but that’s football. I was ready – and it went in.”

The strike, which took the game to extra time, capped a remarkable response just days after the disappointment of FA Youth Cup semi-final defeat at Manchester United.

“I was focused on getting over the line. I was in a bit of pain, like everyone else, but I had to push through. I had chances earlier too – that’s football. At least we’ve won now, and I’m happy. We’ll move on and hopefully win more trophies.”

Under-18s striker Benji Casey was left overwhelmed with emotion after Crystal Palace lifted the Premier League Cup for the very first time in dramatic fashion, in front of more than 4,000 supporters at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace U18 v Manchester United U18 (2026-04-22)

Just five days on from the disappointment of their FA Youth Cup semi-final exit – also against United – the young Eagles looked set for further heartbreak when Noah Ajayi’s first-half strike put the visitors ahead.

But deep into stoppage time, everything changed, as Benji Casey converted a dramatic 94th-minute penalty to force extra time and swing momentum Palace’s way.

Across the 120 minutes, Lucca Benetton played a central role in keeping Palace alive. Inside 16 minutes he tipped Jim Thwaites’ whipped free-kick over the bar, before producing back-to-back saves to deny JJ Gabriel and Thwaites in quick succession. 

He then stood tall in a one-on-one to claw the ball away from Gabriel on 37 minutes, before early in the second half getting a strong hand to another Thwaites effort, pushing it onto the crossbar.

As the game opened up approaching the hour mark, Benetton produced one of the defining moments, getting a crucial touch to Junior Brown’s near-post strike and diverting it onto the post as it rolled along the line before being cleared. There were further big interventions throughout, with the 15-year-old continually called upon as United pressed.

With the final decided on penalties, he delivered again when it mattered most. After five perfect spot-kicks apiece, Benetton sprang to his left to turn Godwill Kukonki’s effort onto the crossbar – the decisive moment that allowed Dean Benamar to fire home the winner and spark jubilant scenes across SE25.

Having played such a central role in the triumph, Benetton admitted he was still trying to process it all.

“I’m speechless, to be honest. I’m just so grateful and so happy to be part of this team.

"I gave it my all today, and the team were amazing – and there you go, we’ve won. That’s what happens when you put everything into it. You get what you deserve.”

For a player so young, the occasion – the club’s first-ever Under-18 Premier League Cup Final – could have been overwhelming. Instead, Benetton embraced it.

“I was just trying to get in their heads. At some point, you feel like one of them might crack – and when the moment came, I got the save. Then it was job done by Dean [Benamar] at the end, and great penalties from the lads. I’m very happy.”

Maintaining concentration throughout such a demanding contest was another challenge Benetton relished.

“There were moments where your heart is racing, especially with the chances at both ends. But it’s about staying composed and focused mentally. I think everyone did that really well. I’m very happy with how we performed – and with how I did as well.”

It capped an extraordinary few days for the goalkeeper, who had also impressed in the FA Youth Cup semi-final at Old Trafford. Despite the high of lifting silverware, his focus quickly turned to what comes next, Norwich away in the U18 Premier League South on Saturday (12:00 BST). 

“It’s a big confidence boost, of course, but as a team we have to stay level-headed. We’ve still got games left in the league, and we need to keep working hard. We’ll celebrate today – and maybe tomorrow – but then it’s focus on the next game. If we keep putting the effort in, the results will come.”

A speechless but jubilant Lucca Benetton struggled to find the words after a standout display helped Crystal Palace Under-18s lift the Premier League Cup for the very first time, in front of more than 4,000 supporters under the lights at Selhurst Park.

Just five days after their FA Youth Cup hopes were ended by the Red Devils at Old Trafford at the semi-final stage, Javier Alonso's U18s pulled themselves back from the edge of defeat to take an epic Final – laced with chances, incidents and fantastic goalkeeping galore – into extra-time.

There, the Young Eagles – blessed with a man advantage, after Benji Casey won and converted a spot-kick deep into injury-time, cancelling out Noah Ajayi's first-half opener for the visitors and seeing Albert Mills dismissed – attacked with vigour, striking the woodwork on three occasions.

But when there was no winner after 120 minutes, it took a tense penalty shootout to separate the two sides – and there, Palace prevailed, scoring six out of six to defeat the Red Devils and win the competition for the first time in the club's history.

The stage was set for an epic – and boy did this U18 Premier League Cup Final deliver at Selhurst Park, in front of a boisterous crowd of just shy of 4,000.

It was the first time Palace had reached the Final, having fallen at semi-final stage in 2023/24 to the same opponents at Carrington, whilst United arrived in strong form, lifting the trophy that season and enjoying another impressive run this season.

Second in the U18 Premier League North, unbeaten in 14 games, and having edged Palace in the Youth Cup semi-final on Friday, Darren Fletcher’s side were set to provide a stern test for the Young Eagles.

Javier Alonso made one change, with Donte Martin replacing David Angibeaud, who sustained a concussion at Old Trafford. Skipper Jasper Judd remained unavailable through injury, while Mylo Bernard was on England duty in the USA.

Palace started brightly, with Dean Benamar a constant outlet down the left. The 17-year-old surged forward at every opportunity, twice looking to slide teammates in behind before creating the first opening of the evening.

United soon began to grow into the contest. Inside seven minutes, Noah Ajayi drove into the box and went to ground under pressure, but the referee waved away the appeals. Moments later, Chido Obi broke free of Sean Somade and got a shot away, only for the Palace defender to recover well and make a crucial block.

Approaching the quarter-hour mark, Palace were in the ascendancy. Joel Drakes-Thomas teased his marker with quick feet before drilling a low effort straight at the goalkeeper.

At the other end, Jim Thwaites threatened from a set-piece, his whipped free-kick beating the wall, but Lucca Benetton was equal to it, producing an excellent diving save – his first of many on the night, the 15-year-old in inspired form – to tip the ball over the bar.

United's breakthrough followed in the 19th minute. Chido Obi’s pass found Ajayi in space inside the area, and the forward made no mistake, stroking a composed finish into the far corner to give United the lead.

Palace were enjoying the lion’s share of possession, but United remained a threat on the counter. Gabriel burst into the area, worked space with a series of stepovers, and fired on the swivel – only for Benetton to produce an excellent stop to palm it away.

The game then opened up. Palace came inches from levelling as Casey shifted the ball inside the box and rifled a thunderous strike from a tight angle against the crossbar. Benamar recycled possession and crossed, but Raihaan Anderson couldn’t connect cleanly and United hacked clear.

The young Reds pushed to extend their lead before the break, but Benetton was in inspired form, making a crucial intervention to claw the ball away from JJ Gabriel, who was attempting to round him one-on-one.

Two minutes were added on, but despite pushing for an equaliser, Palace went into the break behind.

It was a lively start to the second-half. United won an early free-kick, and Thwaites’ fierce strike proved difficult for Benetton to deal with initially, the Palace goalkeeper only able to palm it up into the air and onto the bar; he did well, however, to gather at the second attempt.

Chances continued at both ends approaching the hour mark. A direct ball into the box dropped for Junior Brown, who struck towards the near post, with Benetton appearing to get a superb fingertip on it. 

The effort clipped the inside of the post and rolled agonisingly towards the goal line before Charlie Walker-Smith arrived to clear.

At the other end, Benamar remained a constant threat down the left, the wing-back getting to the byline once more before seeing a rising effort ripple the side-netting.

As the half wore on, Palace began to grow in confidence, settling into the game and forcing United 'keeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes into action. Benamar’s excellent cross picked out Martin, whose firm header – perhaps too firm – looped over the bar, though his movement to find space was intelligent.

United responded immediately as Obi teed up Brown, who broke in down the right channel and went for the near post, only to be denied once again by an excellent save from Benetton.

Entering the final 15 minutes of regulation time, United arguably ought to have killed off the contest: first, Amir Ibragimov skewed wide from six yards with the net gaping, and then Obi chipped Benetton one-on-one, but rattled the crossbar moments.

Palace – somehow – were still in it. Drakes-Thomas skipped past his marker and went to ground, but the referee waved away strong appeals for a penalty. Moments later, Euan Danaher’s out-swinging corner picked out Casey, whose goalbound header was well saved by Byrne-Hughes.

Entering stoppage time, Palace captain Chuks Okoli went close with a dipping volley – and then, the moment which changed the course of the contest.

A brilliant run from Casey to reach Okoli's ball forwards. The No. 9 got there, took a touch, and was hauled back by visiting defender Albert Mills – who was immediately sent off for a professional foul.

Despite the protests that the contact began outside the area, a spot-kick was awarded – and deep into injury time, it was the very definition of a pressure penalty.

Not that you'd know it, however, from Casey's cool effort, with Byrne-Hughes diving the right way, but never able to get near the bottom corner which the Palace scorer picked out with precision, taking the contest into extra-time.

What followed, with Palace up against 10 men, was 30 minutes more of extraordinary drama at Selhurst Park.

The pressure to attack was on Alonso's side, and Anderson first tested Byrne-Hughes with a firm header, before the young forward had an effort from a set-piece crowded out.

Moments later, Palace hit the woodwork for the first of three occasions in extra-time. Seconds after Casey was denied following a smart turn inside the area, the ball fell to Danaher, who crashed an effort from the edge of the box against the upright.

Then, on the stroke of half-time in extra-time, another effort against the woodwork, albeit slightly more fortuitously as Drakes-Thomas' apparent cross looped over the 'keeper and hit the frame of the goal.

United were threatening in fits and starts, but the momentum was all Palace's.

That being said, the second-half of extra-time did see the Red Devils threaten, as Samuel Lusale appealed vehemently for a penalty after a challenge by Hugo Bull – nothing given – and Jay McEvoy somehow blazed over the bar at the culmination of a rapid counter-attack. 

Having twisted inside his marker, and with the goal at his mercy, the United attacker really ought to have scored – but to the relief of Selhurst Park, he did not.

On we battled, and on 114 minutes, it was extraordinarily another 'nearly' moment for Palace as Benamar showed excellent control to chest down a cross and fire a fierce rising half-volley goalwards. Byrne-Hughes produced an incredible save at any level, as the strike thumped the crossbar and sailed behind.

In the final few seconds, United Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher swapped goalkeepers – Freddie Heath replacing Byrne-Hughes – whilst Benetton, such an inspiration throughout the night for Palace, made an excellent quick recovery from an initial mis-kick to tackle Obi in the final few seconds.

It seemed only fitting a night packed with such incident would go to penalties.

And it was also fitting the shootout would match the quality of the game, as both teams converted all five of their initial opening spot kicks – frequently finding the top corner to leave the opposition goalkeeper grasping at thin air.

For Palace, it was Casey – again – along with Anderson, Drakes-Thomas, Jacob Fasida and Walker-Smith who all scored their pressure kicks.

Then, the brilliant Benetton produced another magical moment, springing high to his left to turn Godwill Kukonki's shot onto the bar.

Javier Alonso makes just one enforced change from the side that suffered late heartbreak in the FA Youth Cup semi-final at Old Trafford, with David Angibeaud unavailable following a concussion sustained in that match.

In his absence, Donte Martin comes into the front line to partner Benji Casey, with Palace set to line up in a 3-4-3 system. Joel Drakes-Thomas moves into a more advanced No.10 role, while Raihaan Anderson shifts to right wing-back.

Chuks Okoli and Euan Danaher once again anchor the midfield, while Lucca Benetton continues in goal behind a back three of Jacob Fasida, Sean Somade and Charlie Walker-Smith. Walker-Smith has been passed fit after being forced off at half-time on Friday, while Somade continues his return from injury with a third successive start.

A youthful bench includes three Under-16s – Hugo Bull, Dylan Monk and Kayden Moses – alongside first-year scholar Khyan Frazer-Williams and goalkeeper Jack Mason. With only five places available, Kairo Smith-Phillips unfortunately misses out on the matchday squad.

There are two notable absences from the squad. Mylo Bernard, a serial goalscorer who recently stepped up from the U16s, is away on international duty with England Under-16s as part of their tour of the United States.

Captain Jasper Judd also remains unavailable through injury, a continued blow for Alonso’s side heading into tonight’s huge final.

### Lucca Benetton – 'Keeper

**D.o.B.: 8 August 2010 (aged 15)**

Still only 15 years old, Lucca Benetton has established himself as one of the most exciting young goalkeepers in the country and Palace Under-18s’ first-choice goalkeeper in the second half of the season.

He has made 13 appearances across league and cup, keeping two clean sheets, and has already been trusted in major knockout moments – starting both the FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa at Villa Park and the semi-final Manchester United at Old Trafford.

His performance in the latter particularly stood out, delivering a composed and mature display on one of the biggest stages of his young career.

His rapid rise has also been recognised internationally. Alongside United’s JJ Gabriel, he was one of only two players to be moved up an age group within England’s pathway, stepping from U16s into the U17s setup.

Originally an outfield player before fully committing to goalkeeping at Under-12 level, his distribution and comfort in possession remain standout traits. He has also trained regularly with Palace’s first-team goalkeepers, continuing to develop in a senior environment at just 15.

### Jacob Fasida – Left centre back

**D.o.B.: 16 September 2008 (aged 17)**

A versatile defender capable of operating in midfield or as the left-sided centre-back in a back three, Jacob Fasida continues to play an important dual role across both the U18s and U21s.

He first broke into U18 football in November 2024, making his debut in the win over Brighton, before earning his first start later that month in a 4-2 comeback victory over Chelsea (December 2024), where he helped the side recover from two goals down.

His first goal at this level came shortly after in a derby against Brighton – a powerful long-range strike that underlined his ability to influence games from deeper positions.

This season he has continued to split his development between age groups, making 23 appearances for the U18s and 10 for the U21s.

He provides a consistent threat in advanced areas and has added goals and assists to his game this season, including two against West Ham – a low, driven finish away from home and a powerful 20-yard strike at the Academy.

### Sean Somade – Centre back

**D.o.B.: 25 October 2007 (aged 18)**

A powerful and composed centre-back, Somade is also capable of operating at right-back and has been a consistent defensive figure under Alonso.

He progressed through the Academy after joining at U14 level and was part of the U15 Floodlit Cup-winning squad in 2023, before signing his scholarship and stepping into regular U18 football.

Somade has started every game he has been available for this season, providing stability and leadership at the back.

Crucially, this half of the campaign has also been defined by his return from injury. After a spell on the sidelines earlier in the year, he has worked his way back into the starting XI and now makes his third consecutive start since returning to action, re-establishing himself as a key part of the defensive unit.

### Charlie Walker-Smith – Right centre back

**D.o.B.: 19 September 2007 (aged 18)**

A major attacking and defensive presence, Walker-Smith has been a consistent performer for both the U18s and U21s this season, operating primarily at centre-back while providing a significant goal threat.

He has scored six goals and provided three assists, with much of his impact coming from set-pieces and long throws – a key weapon in Palace’s attacking play, which he also delivers himself.

His aerial dominance has been decisive in recent weeks, including goals against Liverpool and a brace against Southampton, both from set-piece situations.

Beyond that, his ability to carry the ball forward and step into midfield has been central to Palace’s progression through the thirds, offering an additional layer to the build-up phase.

Internationally, he has stepped up to Wales U19s and is set to play a key role at the UEFA U19 European Championships in North Wales this summer. He continues to feature regularly for the U21s in Premier League 2.

### Dean Benamar – Left wing-back

**D.o.B.: 31 May 2008 (aged 17)**

A relentless, direct and high-energy wing-back, Benamar provides constant attacking thrust and defensive intensity and continues to operate seamlessly between U18 and U21 level.

He has also taken major steps into senior football this season, making his first-team debut in the UEFA Conference League against KuPS and being named in a Premier League matchday squad against Tottenham Hotspur.

At international level, he has been a consistent presence across England age groups, scoring directly from a corner for the U17s, featuring throughout the UEFA U17 European Championship, and most recently scoring for England U18s in a 2–0 win over Croatia.

His growing influence has also been evident at club level. In the 5–1 win over Liverpool, he finished a flowing move with a composed half-volley one-on-one with the ‘keeper.  Across both U18 and U21 football this season, he has recorded two goals and three assists.

### Euan Danaher – Centre midfield

**D.o.B.: 27 September 2007 (aged 18)**

A composed and intelligent midfielder, Danaher operates as the unsung controller of this Palace side, quietly dictating tempo and structure from deep areas.

Often compared stylistically to a modern deep-lying midfielder, he breaks up play, recycles possession and ensures balance across the team, allowing others to push forward.

He has made over 20 appearances this season and remains central to how Palace build through midfield under Alonso.

### Chuks Okoli – Centre midfield

**D.o.B.: 22 February 2008**

A technically gifted and combative midfielder, Okoli has been at the club since the age of seven and is the creative hub of Alonso’s midfield.

He was instrumental in the U15 Floodlit Cup success and has continued his development into a key figure at U18 level, combining ball progression, creativity and goal threat.

This season he has provided the most assists in the U18 Premier League South, registering seven league assists alongside four goals in key moments, including a stoppage-time winner against Aston Villa in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final.

### Raihaan Anderson – Right wing back

**D.o.B.: 10 May 2008 (aged 17)**

Explosive, direct and fearless, Anderson is a winger who thrives in one-v-one situations and brings constant attacking threat from wide areas.

He has developed through the Academy since U12 level after joining from Millwall, having previously attracted interest from several London clubs. His game is built on pace, power and end product, with over 30 goals and 15 assists at Academy level.

Since returning to full fitness, he has become a growing presence in the side, starting 10 of the last 13 games as his importance has increased during the run-in.

That impact has been reflected in decisive moments, scoring crucial goals in both FA Youth Cup ties against Aston Villa and Manchester United…

### Joel Drakes-Thomas – No. 10

**D.o.B.: 6 September 2009 (aged 16)**

A breakthrough talent this season, Drakes-Thomas has become the youngest player in Crystal Palace history to feature in the Premier League and has also appeared in the UEFA Conference League.

A dynamic attacking wing-back, he offers pace, direct running and the ability to isolate defenders in wide areas, while also operating in more advanced attacking midfield roles.

On his senior debut against KuPS at Selhurst Park, he was named Player of the Match, underlining his impact on the biggest stage.

He has also played key roles in knockout wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Cup this season.

### Donte Martin – Left forward

**D.o.B.: 13 November 2008 (aged 17)**

A direct and intelligent forward, Martin has continued his prolific scoring form since stepping up to U18 level.

After scoring over 30 goals at U16 level, he has quickly adapted to Alonso’s side and added important goals throughout the season. He notably hit a rich vein of form a few weeks back, scoring six in six matches and playing a key role in the side’s crucial run-in across league and cup.

Most recently, he delivered a quick-fire brace in the Premier League Cup quarter-final against Peterborough United, coming off the bench to help swing the tie and secure qualification.

### Benji Casey – Right forward

**D.o.B.: 4 February 2008 (aged 18)**

One of the most clinical forwards in Academy football, Casey arrives at the final in outstanding form.

He has scored 18 goals in just 16 appearances for the U18s across all competitions, including multiple braces and two hat-trick’s, maintaining one of the best minutes-per-goal ratios in the division.

His movement in behind, acceleration and finishing ability make him a constant threat in transition, while he has also impressed at U21 and senior European level this season, including goals in the Premier League International Cup and a first-team European appearance.

### Jack Mason – 'Keeper

**D.o.B.: 30 November 2007 (aged 18)**

A reliable and composed goalkeeper, Mason provides experienced depth in the goalkeeping unit and has featured regularly in matchday squads throughout the season.

He made his U18 debut in the Premier League Cup in 2024, keeping a clean sheet against Birmingham City, and has since stepped in when required across league and cup fixtures, offering consistency and assurance when called upon.

### Hugo Bull – Centre back

**D.o.B.: 16 October 2009 (aged 16)**

An emerging centre-back from the U16s, Bull has quickly adapted to U18 football following his recent step up into Alonso’s squad.

A modern, ball-playing defender, he is comfortable stepping into midfield areas and progressing play from the back, and has gained valuable experience across league and cup competitions in recent weeks as part of his accelerated development.

### Dylan Monk – Centre back 

**D.o.B.:** **13 November 2009 (aged 16)**

Monk joined Palace at seven via the pre-academy from Maidstone, signing officially at U9 level. He has progressed through the Academy system with early exposure on tours in Germany and Morocco, experiences that helped accelerate his development in unfamiliar and challenging environments.

This season he has made eight appearances for the U18s, including his debut in a 4–2 win over Leicester City, minutes against West Ham, and involvement in the FA Youth Cup win over Bradford City at Selhurst Park. He featured regularly around the turn of the year before a recent injury setback, from which he has now returned.

A modern, ball-playing centre-back, Monk is composed in possession, intelligent in his positioning, and comfortable stepping out with the ball while remaining solid defensively when required.

### Kayden Moses – Midfielder

**D.o.B.:** **21 November 2009 (aged 16)**

A tall and technically gifted attacking midfielder, Moses has stepped up from U16 level and is continuing his transition into U18 football, making his U18 debut in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea the week before last.

Comfortable receiving in tight areas and carrying the ball forward, he has already gained valuable minutes in league and cup fixtures, including involvement at Old Trafford in the FA Youth Cup semi-final, as he continues to integrate into the group.

### Khyan Frazer-Williams – Left wing-back

**D.o.B.: 25 November 2007 (aged 18)**

A pacey and athletic full-back, Frazer-Williams joined Palace following a successful trial and brings energy and directness to wide defensive areas.

He previously gained senior experience in Step Four football with AFC Dunstable and developed through Watford’s Academy from U9 to U16 level, giving him a strong and varied football foundation as he continues his adaptation to Academy football at Palace.

Each ticket will include – as listed on each supporter’s passport – the purchaser’s **name and passport number**, which supporters will be asked to provide during the sales process (**supporters** **must have these details available at the time of purchase**). These details are required by Polish law to obtain a ticket.

**All supporters will be required to take their passports to the stadium. There will be strict ticket checks,** where all supporters will be required to show the passport which matches the details on their ticket.

Supporters who do not have their passports with them at these checkpoints may be refused entry to the stadium. If a supporter’s passport does not match the details on their ticket, they may also be refused entry to the stadium.

More details with regards to how Palace supporters are advised to travel to the match will be made available closer to the fixture.

### **Attendance**

**It is strongly recommended that supporters only purchase a ticket if they are certain they can attend the game.**

Just five days after being eliminated from the FA Youth Cup semi-finals by a Manchester United side which had won every single one of their matches in 2026 – a run of 14 games – the Eagles looked set to taste defeat at the hands of the Red Devils once more, thanks to Noah Ajayi’s first-half finish.

But in the final seconds of injury time, Benji Casey won – and scored – a sensational stoppage-time penalty kick, in a foul which also saw Albert Mills dismissed for United.

Palace continued to press for a winner in extra-time and struck the woodwork on numerous occasions, before Dean Benamar crashed home the winning spot-kick at the culmination of a high-quality penalty shootout.

U18s head coach Alonso told Palace TV: “I don't have words for the boys. They did an unbelievable job this season. They gave their best, fighting under the lights of Selhurst Park with the supporters.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement for the squad, for the boys. I'm really proud for all the boys. I'm buzzing now because I think they deserve a trophy this year because they are top players.

“The game was tough because there was a lot of transitions for everyone, chances for Manchester United, chances for us. We scored three or four minutes before full-time, extra time. 

“We had chances, we hit the crossbar, they had chances, then there were penalties… I'm happy for the boys because they deserve a lot of emotions today. I'm really proud.”

Palace have challenged for the U18 Premier League South title all season long and also reached the latter stages of the Youth Cup – with the lifting of the Premier League Cup trophy seals a superb season.

Alonso added: “I said to the boys today: ‘we cannot finish this season without a trophy’ because the mentality of the players is unbelievable. They're always trying to give their best, trying to fight, trying to play together, pushing themselves a lot in training. 

“The other day we lost against Manchester United but we knew that at Selhurst Park it would be different and really proud. I’m buzzing, yes.

“[Before penalties] I just said to the boys 'you are top players. You deserve to be here under the lights of Selhurst Park'. We are going to win. Just choose one side, go with confidence. 

“They are top players. It's a magic moment for the Academy.”

And to the thousands of the supporters in attendance, Alonso added: “First of all, thank you for the support. 

“We feel extra energy because we needed it to go to extra time against Manchester United twice in five days. It's a lot of running for the boys and I'm really, really proud.

“Thank you for the support for the Academy. It's my first season here and I'm really, really happy here.”

Palace have been represented in the Three Lions squad for over a century now, with FOUR players in the England squad which reached the European Championship final in Germany back in 2024, more representation than any other club.

Starting with the very first Palace player to pull on the famous white jersey, let's take a look back at all the players to make the journey from South London to the national side...

### **Charles Chenery (First cap 1872)**

**Total England caps: 3**

Chenery lined up for England in the first recognised international football match, facing Scotland in November 1872. The game took place at West of Scotland Cricket Club's ground, in Partick, and finished as a goalless draw, setting the tone for many an England-Scotland encounter over the next 150 years. He was recalled for the rematch at the Kennington Oval in London, scoring England's fourth in a 4-2 win.

### **Horace Colclough (1914)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 1**

The left-back became the first player in the club’s history to win an England cap when he played for the Three Lions in a 1914 British Home Championships international victory against Wales at Ninian Park. It would prove to be England’s penultimate match before the outbreak of World War One, and during the conflict Colclough suffered a leg injury, speculated to have been picked up playing football for the British Army, or a gunshot wound.

### **Jack Alderson (1923)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 1**

During the war, Newcastle United goalkeeper Alderson was based in Woolwich and guested for Palace in some wartime matches, before going on to sign for the club following its conclusion. He went on to play over 200 times for the Glaziers, and his impressive form in the Second Division led to him receiving his solitary England cap in 1923 in a friendly against France in Paris, which ended in a 4-1 triumph for the Three Lions.

### **Johnny Byrne (1961)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 11**

The legendary Glaziers attacker was handed his first cap for his country by Walter Winterbottom despite playing for Palace in the third tier, and remains one of only five players to achieve this feat. The 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland in the British Home Championships saw Budgie play alongside 1966 heroes Ray Wilson and Bobby Charlton, with the Manchester United legend scoring the hosts’ goal at Wembley.

### **Peter Taylor (1976)**

**Caps won at Palace: 4**

**Total England caps: 4**

Another player who was capped despite playing in the Third Division, Taylor remains the only man in Palace’s history to have scored for England, marking his debut against Wales in 1976 with a goal, before netting against the same opposition his second match. He would appear twice more that year against Northern Ireland and Scotland in the Home Championships, with the Scots pipping their old rivals to the title in Taylor’s last international appearance.

### **Kenny Sansom (1979)**

**Caps won at Palace: 9**

**Total England caps: 86**

Once England’s most capped left-back before another former Palace man Ashley Cole surpassed his impressive haul, Sansom also made his debut against the Welsh three years after Taylor had, despite being the tender age of 20. The game ended in a goalless draw, however Sansom would win eight more caps while in SE25, including two in Euro 1980, making him the only Eagle to represent England at a major tournament.

### **Ian Wright (1991)**

**Caps won at Palace: 4**

**Total England caps: 33**

After helping establish his name during the club’s golden period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Wright was handed his first England cap by Graham Taylor when he partnered Gary Lineker up front against Cameroon at Wembley, in what resulted in a 2-0 win for the hosts. He would come on as a sub in a World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland the following month, and played twice on a summer tour of the Far East before moving to Arsenal.

### **Geoff Thomas (1991)**

**Caps won at Palace: 9**

**Total England caps: 9**

The Palace captain at the time enjoyed a run in the England side under Taylor, beginning with a debut against Turkey in a Euro 92 qualifier in Izmir. Following that he played six times during a packed summer of international friendlies in 1991, including against New Zealand in Wellington where three Eagles started for the Three Lions, but his international career ended against France the following year.

### **John Salako (1991)**

**Caps won at Palace: 5**

**Total England caps: 5**

Another player to benefit from the tour of Asia and Australasia that summer, the winger won cap number one as a half-time sub in a 1-0 win against Australia in Sydney. He would feature three more times on that trip, including lining up alongside Thomas and Wright against New Zealand, and won his final cap against World Cup holders Germany in August 1991 when he was replaced by future Eagle Paul Stewart.

### **Andy Gray (1991)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 1**

Taylor continued to look towards Selhurst Park to improve his aging squad, and called up Gray for the Euro 92 qualifier against Poland in November 1991. The winger started the game in Poznan alongside Thomas, but with England trailing at the break and needing a point to secure their place at the finals in Sweden, he was sacrificed for Arsenal striker Alan Smith and never played international football again.

### **Nigel Martyn (1992)**

**Caps won at Palace: 3**

**Total England caps: 23**

After Thomas, Wright, Salako and Gray had been discarded, Taylor continued to have a Palace presence in his squad by selecting Nigel Martyn as back-up to Chris Woods. The keeper was given a chance to show his credentials in a friendly against the CIS in Moscow as an 80th minute sub in a 2-2 draw, before starting a Euro 92 warm-up match against Hungary in Budapest which helped him seal his place in Taylor’s final 20-man squad, ahead of David Seaman.

### **Andrew Johnson (2005)**

**Caps won at Palace: 2**

**Total England caps: 8**

After 13 years without an England representative, a purple patch in front of goal helped force AJ into Sven-Goran Eriksson’s thoughts during the 2004/05 season. In February 2005, he replaced Wayne Rooney as a 61st-minute sub in a goalless draw against Holland at Villa Park, and would go on tour to the USA the following summer, starting in a 2-1 win in Chicago before winning the rest of his caps at Everton.

### **Wilfried Zaha (2012)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 2**

Having been tearing up Championship defences for the past few years, the Eagles’ strong start to the 2012/13 season saw the winger selected by Roy Hodgson for a friendly against Sweden in Stockholm. Wilf came on in the 85th minute during a 4-2 defeat for the Three Lions, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring all the Swede’s goals. Cap number two would come as a Manchester United player against Scotland the following year, before a switch of allegiances to Cote d'Ivoire for the remainder of his international career.

### **Andros Townsend (2013)**

**Caps won at Palace: 2**

**Total England caps: 13**

Townsend was already a full England international when he signed for Crystal Palace in 2016, having made his debut three years earlier under Roy Hodgson in which he scored against Montenegro.

### **Sam Johnstone (2021)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 4**

Johnstone was part of the England squad to reach the final of the European Championships in 2021, having made his debut just before the tournament in a friendly against Romania.

He continued to be selected after moving to South London, keeping his fourth clean sheet in as many caps against Australia in October 2023, before injury ruled him out of contention for Euro 2024.

### **Conor Gallagher (2021)**

**Caps won at Palace: 4**

**Total England caps: 19**

Gallagher's scintillating form in south London - which would later earn him the club's Player of the Year award - saw him catch the eye of Gareth Southgate, making his debut in November 2021 in England's 10-0 win against San Marino. He has since been a regular in the England squad and travelled to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

### **Marc Guéhi (2022)**

**Caps won at Palace: 23**

**Total England caps: 23**

After establishing himself as one of the Premier League's standout defenders, Guéhi became a regular under Gareth Southgate and played his way into a starting spot for the run to the final of Euro 2024.

He earned his 20th cap against Finland under interim boss Lee Carsley - with whom he was made captain of the Under-21s side - and he looks set to add to that tally in years to come.

### **Tyrick Mitchell (2022)**

**Caps won at Palace: 2**

**Total England caps: 2**

Mitchell earned an England call-up in March 2022, making his debut against Switzerland as a second-half substitute for Luke Shaw. He added a second cap against Cote d'Ivoire

### **Ebere Eze (2022)**

**Caps won at Palace: 10**

**Total England caps: 10**

It was always going to be a matter of time before Eze played his way into Southgate's thinking, and the cruelest of setbacks - an achilles injury the day of his first call-up - did not keep him down for long. He made a long-awaited debut for his country against Malta in May 2023.

His first goal for the Three Lions would duly arrive in March 2025 - a superbly taken strike against Latvia, under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

### **Adam Wharton (2024)**

**Total England caps: 1**

Wharton's remarkable rise after his move from Championship Blackburn Rovers to the Premier League was capped by making his England debut in the lead up to the European Championships over summer, playing against Bosnia & Herzegovina at St James' Park.

He made his way into the squad for the tournament, but didn't feature in Germany. Although called up for the under-21s initially, Wharton trained with the senior team during the most recent international break, following his comeback from injury.

### **Dean Henderson (2020)**

**Caps won at Palace: 1**

**Total England caps: 2**

Henderson made his England debut at Wembley against the Republic of Ireland, coming on as a substitute while still a Manchester United player.

His first appearance in an England shirt while representing Palace came in the October international break earlier this season, starting under then interim boss Lee Carsley against Finland in Helsinki.

The Young Eagles overcame Manchester United in a dramatic penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra-time, in front of over 3,500 supporters at Selhurst Park on Wednesday evening, to claim success in the Academy's first-ever U18 Premier League Cup Final.

An end-to-end contest chock full of chances – with Lucca Benetton making some excellent saves in the Eagles' goal – saw Palace trailing 1-0 deep in injury time, when a brilliant run from Benji Casey saw the young forward brought down as he charged into the box.

After Albert Mills saw red for Manchester United, Casey brushed himself down and slotted home a superb penalty to take the game into extra-time.

Numerous chances followed in extra-time, with Palace thrice hitting the woodwork and United also going close on the break, but with no further goals, it was a penalty shoot-out which settled the contest.

There, after five impressive kicks apiece, Benetton turned Godwill Kukonki's effort onto the bar – giving Dean Benamar the chance to opportunity to seal the trophy from the spot.

The 17-year-old duly crashed home from 12 yards to spark scenes of jubilation among players, staff and supporters alike in SE25!

[En route to lifting the trophy](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/match-previews/pl-cup-final-preview-eagles-bid-to-make-history-against-red-hot-red-devils/), Palace have gone unbeaten in all six matches, scoring 15 goals along the way and conceding just 6, seeing off the likes of Sheffield United, Chelsea, Peterborough, Tottenham and – finally – United, whose U18s side themselves had been on a 14-game winning streak in all competitions before they met the Young Eagles.

Palace now join previous winners West Ham (24/25), Manchester United (23/24), Tottenham (22/23), Chelsea (21/22 and 17/18) and Manchester City (19/20 and 18/19) in having raised the prestigious trophy.
