Whyte was part of the Under-15 side that reached the U15 National Floodlit Cup final in 2021/22, finishing as runners-up. He continued his development through the Academy ranks and earned a scholarship ahead of the 2023/24 season.
He made an immediate impression at Under-18 level, keeping a clean sheet on his first start in a 5-0 win over Southampton on the opening day of the campaign. His progress was quickly recognised with a first Under-21 appearance in September 2023, coming off the bench in a 6-2 Premier League Cup win over Middlesbrough.
Whyte opened his goalscoring account later that year in a 5-2 win away at Tottenham Hotspur in November 2023, finishing his first Under-18 campaign with one goal and one assist.
One of his standout contributions came in the build-up to Jesse Derry’s spectacular scissor-kick against Brighton & Hove Albion – a strike later voted Goal of the Month in February 2024.
He went on to make 15 appearances in total during the 2023/24 season (14 for the U18s and one for the U21s), before stepping up as a regular starter for the Under-18s in 2024/25, featuring in 24 of a possible 28 matches and scoring twice.
The 2025/26 campaign marked his introduction to regular Under-21 football, where he made 16 appearances across the season. Operating across the back line – often as part of a back three or in a wide defensive role – he impressed with his energy, defensive discipline and ability to impact games from deep.
He finished the season strongly, starting five consecutive matches during the run-in, along with two further appearances late in the campaign, including the final Premier League 2 league phase fixture against Arsenal and the PL2 quarter-final against Manchester United.
Whyte also stood out for his defensive interventions in key moments, producing crucial goal-line clearances and last-ditch blocks against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers.
