100 Years of Selhurst Park

## South London and Proud

> Born in Greenwich, south London, Eberechi Eze joined Palace in summer 2020 as a landmark signing and has since established himself as a leading attacking talent in the Premier League.

Eberechi Eze signed a five-year contract with Crystal Palace F.C. in August 2020, becoming the club’s second arrival of the summer transfer window.

The south London-born playmaker rose through the ranks at Queens Park Rangers after joining them in 2016. An FA Cup debut followed in January 2017 and later that year, Eze made 22 appearances in a half-season loan to Wycombe Wanderers.

Then still a teenager, the attack-minded youngster played a key role in the Chairboys’ promotion to League One that season, scoring five goals - including a brace against Cambridge United.

On his return to QPR, Eze established himself as a regular first-team player, being awarded the No.10 shirt and a three-year contract in 2018. He left the Hoops with 20 goals from 112 senior games, collecting Supporters’ Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Junior Hoops Player of the Season for 19/20 as well as being shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year.

Internationally, Eze has represented England at both Under-20 and Under-21 level, and was named in the U21 squad the same week he signed for Palace.

He made his Palace debut as an 81st-minute substitute against Southampton in September 2020, and scored his first goal for the Eagles shortly after, netting a Goal of the Month free-kick versus Leeds United.

Another sensational strike – this time against Sheffield United – earned Eze the club's Goal of the Season award for 2020/21. He finished the 20/21 campaign with six goals and four assists in 35 games.

The midfielder received a call from the England first-team, after his performances in 20/21, but was desperately unfortunate to suffer an Achillies injury two matches before the end of the season, keeping him sidelined for over six months.

Injury meant that the majority of 2021/22 was spent in recovery for Eze, but he returned in the latter part of campaign and scored his only goal of 21/22 in a 2-1 win away at Southampton – a well-taken finish.

The following season was Eze's finest in a Palace shirt to date, the playmaker establishing himself as a leading offensive talent in the Premier League.

The No. 10 featured in all 38 of the Eagles' Premier League games in 2022/23, coming into his own after the World Cup break, finishing the season with 10 goals – Palace's top scorer – and four assists to his name. He was at his mesmeric best during April 2023, scoring four times in Palace’s six games and earning a Premier League Player of the Month nomination.

In June, Eze became the 18th Crystal Palace player to represent England, coming on after 70 minutes of a 4-0 win over Malta – and even having an effort cleared off the line.

He made his 100th Premier League appearance for the club against Fulham in September 2023 and signed a new three-and-a-half year deal in November, extending his stay in SE25 until 2027.

His 2023/24 season was intermittently broken up due to injury, however he still managed to produce his best ever season in terms of attacking returns with 11 goals and four assists in 27 Premier League games. Eze also won the Goal of the Season award, as voted for by the fans, with his winner at Anfield in April 2024.

Eze's fine form towards the end of 23/24 saw him called up to the England squad ahead of the 2024 UEFA European Championship. He was also rewarded with his first start for the Three Lions in a 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in early June.

He made an impact off the bench on three occasions for England, helping the side to the final they finished runners-up in the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

The Eagles have acquitted themselves well against both Newcastle United and Ipswich Town in the last week, picking up a point last time out in SE25 before winning at Portman Road, and now welcome the reigning Premier League champions to South London.

Guéhi said ahead of the visit of City: “It's been a tough start to the season, but the team has found a way to gel together. There's been a lot of new players coming in and finding a way to settle into the way the manager wants us to play.

“I'm glad that we got the win \[Tuesday night\], which was an important win against a really good team. Hopefully now, we’re trying to build on those wins.”

After four consecutive Premier League titles, City’s recent difficulties have been well documented, but Guéhi warned: “I'm not too sure I believe in ‘playing teams at good times’.

“At the end of the day, you're still playing Manchester City: world-class players, the champions, going up against Pep Guardiola, one of the best managers in the world.

“There’s not a good time to play City, but we’ll go into it with confidence, off the back of our own performances, and see if we can get a result.

“I think as a player, as a team, you go into any game feeling confident. There's no point going into games not feeling confident and not believing that you can win.

“At the same time, like I said, we’re playing Manchester City, they're one of the best teams in the world, so you've definitely got to be mindful of that, for sure.”

With Guardiola’s influence on the Premier League evident, Guéhi was also full of praise for the start which manager Oliver Glasner has made in his first year at Crystal Palace.

“The manager is more like a teacher, to be honest,” Guéhi explained. 

“He's someone that we’ve all learned a lot from, myself included – someone who tries to really involve the whole squad in the learning process of the way that he wants us to play, constantly asking us questions.

“He's definitely one of the best managers I've worked under, for sure. He and the staff have been amazing. You just want to do well for him because he has that trust for each and every one of us, and has that respect for each and every one of us. 

"He's someone that we definitely look to as a leader, and we just want to do well for him.”

The Colombia international's first goal for the club arrived in the most remarkable of circumstances at Selhurst Park last Saturday, securing his team a fully-deserved 1-1 draw in a game they'd otherwise dominated.

In the final moments of injury-time, Marc Guéhi checked inside frmo the left wing and swung a cross to the far post where Muñoz was creeping in to head home, Pope unable to keep it from squirming into his bottom corner.

The goal sparked superb scenes at Selhurst, with manager Oliver Glasner sprinting down the touchline to join in the jubilant celebrations with his players.

"Thank you to the fans for voting for me for Goal of the Month!" Muñoz smiled, collecting his trophy. 

It was one of the closest Goal of the Month votes in recent times, with Muñoz's goal winning 35.5% of your votes – just half a percent more than Justin Devenny's first Premier League goal against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

That was similarly a dramatic goal as it arrived on the counter-attack just seconds after Dean Henderson had kept out a Villa penalty.

The Eagles showed plenty of grit and character to overcome Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Tuesday evening, and now turn their attentions to the visit of the reigning Premier League champions to SE25.

### “There are more reasons than just confidence”

We have two wins, two draws and one loss \[in our last five Premier League games\], so it goes in the right direction. The performances look quite stable at the moment, but we have to show it again against City, even on a better level than we did before.

There are more reasons than just confidence. The players are getting into the rhythm without pre-season. We are physically in much better shape than we have been at the beginning of the season.

The structure, how we are playing, we have new signings… it's getting more into their mind and into their body than it was at the beginning. It's a process where we are, but we are still \[near\] the bottom of the table. We still have many parts in our game that we can improve. 

Yes, it gives us confidence, the results, the performances, but it's no time to lay back and relax.

### “We have to be more efficient”

It is what we can and have to improve: to be more efficient. But on the other side, another opportunity is to create more chances. Then you can miss more, but you also score more goals.

It's also sometimes to be more confident with the ball. We give the ball away too easily in several moments, and then we have to work very hard to get it back. The positive thing is we work very hard to get the ball back, but it would be easier to play if we reduce these easy or unforced errors.

But we are still, let's say, not even in the middle of the season, in the first half of the season, and we will work on it.

### “If you don’t believe in yourself…”

You always go with confidence into games, otherwise if you don't believe in yourself that you can win a game, it's better you don't play it, because then you have no chance.

We always enter a game with the belief in us, with the belief that we can win the game, and this is the same what we are doing tomorrow. We know the defending champion is coming. 

Especially in football, everything goes so quick. When you win twice, you are the upcoming champion, and when you lose twice, the era is gone. I have so much respect for Pep \[Guardiola\] and what he did for Man City and for football, and how they're playing.

Their style is always the same, and also when they didn't get the results, many games they could have won, they missed chances where they scored from the games before, they made some mistakes where they conceded goals, and then they're all human beings.

At the start of the season, I think it was 11 wins and three draws, and they're the same players. They were struggling with injuries, but all of a sudden when you lose once or twice, then some mechanism in our mind starts, and then you… Before, and everybody knows this, you feel sometimes you are not vulnerable, but all of a sudden, then, ‘I got the knock, and then, oh, we can also lose’, and I think this is what happened.

But they're great players. I watched the Nottingham \[Forest\] game \[a 3-0 win for City\], their structure is clear, and their passing is so quick, their possession, their rotations, their runs, the great dribbles on their wing.

Whoever is playing, we don't know, and I think they're suffering with two new injuries in the back four, but it will be a great Manchester City squad we are facing at Selhurst, but again, to come back to the start, we believe that we have a chance to win the game.

### “You can’t press them 90 minutes”

I think it's a mix \[of tactics needed to beat City\]. You can't press them 90 minutes on the edge of their box, because with their quick passing they will get too many situations, but yes, in some parts you can press them high, but also I think they conceded more goals from teams who defend in a deeper block, because then you have a lot of space.

And when they play, they build up sometimes with a 3-1-6, and then when you win the ball, it's just three and one behind the ball, and this gives you space, but you need the space, so I think it's a mix, and the team have to decide, because when you press very high, you need a lot of power, and I can tell them whatever I want, if they don't have the power in this moment, it doesn't work, because then you are late, late, late, and with their quick passing, you open all the space, so the players can decide. 

They know how we want to do it, in their situations, but they have to decide, if they feel in this physical shape, to run and press them high, then we will press them high, and there will be moments when they suffer, to defend in a deep block, and always double their wingers, and have their runs in behind, especially with \[Kevin\] De Bruyne, with Bernardo Silva, playing \[Ilkay\] Gundogan from the sixth, playing these quick passes, \[Erling\] Haaland makes runs, the wingers are there, so it will be a lot to defend, but again, we believe that we can do it.

### “We had games where we played better”

\[Compared to Tuesday's win at Ipswich\] I think we had games where we played better, and maybe we lost or had a draw. 

At Ipswich it wasn't about having the best performance, it was about getting this win, and waiting for your chances, and then scoring a goal, and defending as a unit, so this was the clear goal when we went to Ipswich.

‘Job done’, I think this would be the headline. It was not a brilliant performance, but everything that we needed to do, we did, and yes, every win, every good performance gives us confidence.

### “It’s easy to coach Mateta”

It's easy to coach him, a great guy who is always laughing and smiling when he arrives. He’s one of the first here, working very hard.

I think he suffered at the beginning of the season with the Olympics tournament, with all these games, with all the emotions he had there, and losing the final, playing so many minutes there, coming back four days before the Premier League start, he wasn't fresh, mentally especially.

But yes, he scored so many goals, and he played and played, and I also had him twice on the bench, not to punish him, not just to give him the break that he maybe needed, and I explained it, and showed his character, he was always positive, and said: ‘gaffer, as long as you need me, I'm here for the team’, and then he gets the reward, and this is what he gets now. 

### “Haaland is very dangerous”

He's very dangerous with his runs, with his pace, with his desire to score goals in the box, great movements, and usually then he drops off the back of the defender on the far post, always being on the offside line for making runs in behind, and then usually he doesn't need many chances.

I think he was the top scorer last season in the Premier League. He's still fighting for this trophy \[the Golden Boot this season\], so: great striker, with a lot of desire to score, so we have to control him, but also we have to control the passing lines, that he doesn't get the ball, we have to avoid the crossings to him, so yeah, a lot to do!
