## Asher Agbinone

> Having been at the club since Under-9s, Asher Agbinone is an exciting talent who is cabale of playing anywhere along the front three.

Asher Agbinone is an explosive forward who is adept at going down the left, right or the middle. He has played up the ranks through various age groups, making his debut for Rob Quinn's Under 18s as a substitute at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

He scored his first goal for the U18s in October 2022, netting the winner late on in a 1-2 victory over Sheffield United in the Under 18 Premier League Cup.

His performances throughout the years earned him his first professional contract in October 2022.

Agbinone won the Crystal Palace Goal of the Month for March 2023 with a sensational strike from the outside of the box against Tottenham Hotspur U18s.

The young winger made his first appearance of 2023/24 off the bench in the FA Youth Cup third round against Plymouth Argyle U18s in December 2023, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines. He notched the assist for George King's winner in the 80th minute, seeing Palace through to the fourth round.

He scored his first goal of 23/24 in a 3-2 win against Aston Villa U18s - a well taken strike from the edge of the box that was nominated for December 2023's Goal of the Month award.

The turn of the year saw Agbinone go from strength to strength, as he continued to find the net for the U18s and even featured for the U21s against Southampton. He finished 23/24 with 20 appearances in total (18 for the U18s and two for U21s) with nine goals and one assist.

His performances earned him a place in the first-team's pre-season squad which went on tour to the United States. Agbinone rounded off the scoring as Palace beat Wolves 3-1 in Maryland.

He was then awarded a place in the first-team matchday squad in September 2024, featuring on the bench against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Agbinone made his Premier League debut in October 2024, coming on as a substitute against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

“I’m feeling good,” Agbinone said after coming on late in the second-half against Nottingham Forest.

“Obviously, the result didn’t go as we wanted to, so that kind of overshadows it, but I’m still grateful.”

Agbinone has been at the club since the age of nine, and has progressed through the ranks to earn his first-team debut at the City Ground. 

He has predominantly been a tricky winger that takes his player on and he went on to reveal that this was encouraged by the manager and coaching staff when he came on.

“\[They told me to\] just be direct, positive and make something happen. Unfortunately, I couldn’t and it didn’t go the way that we wanted, but we will continue to work hard.

“It felt great \[to receive the ball and take the defender on\], it’s something I always like to do, but again nothing really came of it so I’ve got to continue to work hard and go again.”

Agbinone previously featured as part of the first-team squad that went on tour to the United States in pre-season, scoring against West Ham United, and has also featured in multiple matchday squads this season.

“I would say that \[my hard work has been rewarded\]. I’m very thankful for the gaffer, and obviously the team, the coaches and the backroom staff, for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

“Training up has been excellent, it’s everything I would want. Getting challenged against some of the best players in the world, it's tough every day, and that's what I like to do.”

Finally, Agbinone was full of praise for the fans and set his sights firmly on Sunday against Spurs. “That's our aim for every game \[to get three points\], that's what the gaffer wants us to do, and I therefore believe that we're capable of doing that with the players that we've got in the locker room.

“The fans were excellent, singing from minute one to minute 98, so I can't thank them enough for coming all this way, and I hope to see the support again against Tottenham.”

In his post-match press conference, the manager said: “It looks like, at the moment, that every game is a little bit the same: a close game and one or two situations decide it. It was the same today. The team, the players, they tried everything, worked hard, created chances, created situations.

“But at the end if we don't score – at the moment we don't score goals, we should score more – then it's always tough: one mistake and then we get punished. I think we’ve all had better times in football, better times in sports.

“The players tried everything to win the game, to get the equaliser at the end. But at the moment, we have to be honest, it's not enough.

“Everybody's frustrated, everybody's disappointed. And yes, it's our responsibility, especially mine now, to get chins up, the head up of every single player to support them.

“At the moment I don't think it's a tactical problem, it's a mentality problem. It's a lack of confidence, we can see it, and so this is what we have to change. And if you don't win, of course, it's not that easy.

“But the passion today, the hard work, the mentality… I saw the players in the dressing room are very disappointed, but nobody was blaming each other. Now, it's time to support each other."

One positive from Monday evening saw 18-year-old winger Asher Agbinone produce a bright cameo on his senior Crystal Palace debut.

Glasner noted: “We brought him on because he has a lot of pace. He can run in behind and dribble. He also created a corner, and this was the reason, because he's maybe one of our fastest players. He's a very good talent.

“I think it's not the moment to give all the responsibility of scoring to an 18-year-old Academy player. With other players, I saw them taking the responsibility. But it was two unbelievable saves from \[Forest goalkeeper Matz\] Sels, from Ebs’ finish and \[Jeffrey\] Schlupp’s finish especially. Twice we hit the post, so again, there’s no one to blame at the moment."

Glasner said of goalkeeper Dean Henderson: “He tried to apologise \[for the goal\] but I didn't allow it. It's not to blame anybody – he made so many big saves for us this season and last season, and it happens. It's sports and again, they are all human.

“It's always about how we deal with the mistakes. It took us 5-10 minutes, and then the reaction of the team is what gives me a positive feeling for our next games.

“Against Tottenham \[on Sunday\], I don't expect an easy game. This is a great team, very attacking, they have a lot of pace, maybe the team with the most pace in the league.

“We know the challenges we have, and we will need Dean – and he will help us for sure.”
