> Full-back Daniel Muñoz signed for Palace from Belgian side K.R.C. Genk having built a reputation across the continent for combining his defensive duties with an attacking prowess going forwards.

Born in Amalfi, a modest town with a population of just over 22,000 in the Antioquia Department in north-east Colombia, Daniel Muñoz’s journey to the Premier League encapsulates the versatility, commitment, and passion he has become renowned for as a player.

Growing up near to Medellín – the second-largest city in Colombia – Muñoz’s boyhood team were Atlético Nacional, his local club and the nation’s most successful side. Pictures would later emerge on social of a teenage Muñoz in the stands, shirtless and roaring his Atlético heroes.

Starting out as a player at the nearby Cosmos Soccer School as a six-year-old, Muñoz moved to Envigado at 12 years of age – the youth department which has produced the likes of James Rodriguez, Freddy Guarín and Jhon Cordoba – before moving to Arco Zaragoza Medellin, one of the most famous amateur teams in Colombia.

But despite a handful of trials elsewhere, including reports of interest abroad, Muñoz reached the age of 20 without having made his professional breakthrough, and was reputedly forced to consider retirement.

Yet Muñoz persisted briefly turned out for regional club, FC Total Soccer, where his displays alerted him to Jose Fernando Salazar – a scout from top-flight club Águilas Doradas – who would later recruit the defender in early 2017.

Muñoz rose quickly to the challenges of the professional game, quickly becoming one of Águilas Doradas’ most important players and making 37 appearances in his first season.

Catching the eye during three years in Rionegro, he played 94 times and scored three goals from full-back – and would fulfil his lifelong dream when coach Juan Carlos Osorio signed him up for Atlético Nacional in 2019.

Once more, his impact was immediate, and before Muñoz had even reached double figures for appearances for Nacional, he had been called up by Colombia coach Carlos Quieroz for friendly matches against Brazil and Venezuela in September 2019, only denied his international debut by injury.

Scoring a remarkable seven goals in 20 league games in his maiden year, Muñoz was named Nacional captain at the age of 23, just six months after joining the club.

He opted to pursue his dream of playing in Europe at four-time Belgian champions K.R.C. Genk – rebuilding after a challenging campaign – ahead of the 2020/21 season, and Muñoz was once again quick to find his feet, starting out in midfield before coming to dominate the right-back position in the team.

The defender played in every one of Genk’s Jupiler Pro League fixtures in his debut year, picking up five assists as his new club bounced back from a seventh-place finish the previous season to mount a title challenge and finish second. The following season, he would help Genk win the Belgian Cup.

After two previous call-ups, Muñoz’s Colombia debut finally arrived in June 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Peru.

Muñoz remained with the squad ahead of the 2021 Copa América finals in Brazil that month, playing the full 90 minutes in five of his country’s seven games – keeping three clean sheets – as Colombia missed out on a spot in the final after losing to Lionel Messi's Argentina on penalties, but then defeated Peru to finish third.

Last season, 2022/23, was his best in front of goal, as he scored seven times and registered seven assists in just 30 games. He departed Genk having made 148 appearances in all competitions (including 18 in European competition), scoring 19 goals and 20 assists in total.

In his first half-season in red and blue, Muñoz made 14 appearances and recorded four assists. He also scored his first goal for Colombia in a friendly against Spain in March 2023.

Muñoz carried his strong form in red and blue into the 2024 Copa America, where he and fellow Palace teammate Jefferson Lerma finished as runners-up. He opened the scoring for Los Cafeteros in the tournament in a 2-1 win against Paraguay and went on to net a the equaliser in a draw against Brazil and also register an assist in the quarter-final victory over Panama.

In November 2024, Muñoz scored his first ever goal for Palace in some style. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, he headed home a cross from captain Marc Guéhi at the far post to equalise Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, prompting wild celebrations which manager Oliver Glasner also got involved in.

England host both Albania (Friday, 21st March, 19:45 GMT) and Latvia (Monday, 24th March, 19:45) at Wembley Stadium to kick off Group K and their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Named in the Three Lions' new manager's first squad in charge, Eze, Guéhi and Henderson will be looking to add to their nine, 22 and two senior international caps respectively.

Wharton is also involved in the England set-up after excelling in recent weeks for Palace, following his return from injury.

The midfielder could be in line to add to his sole cap for the U21 side when they face France on Friday, 21st March (20:00 GMT) and Portugal on Monday, 24th March (19:45 GMT) in a pair of friendlies.

Elsewhere, Romain Esse, Caleb Kporha, Justin Devenny, Chris Richards, Matt Turner, Jefferson Lerma and Daniel Muñoz have all also been called up for international duty at the end of March.

Called up on Thursday afternoon, **Esse** will feature for England's Elite League squad (also known as the Under-20s) in their double header with Portugal and Switzerland. The attacker already has eight caps for the Young Lions at that level and scored in a 4-0 win over Germany last November.

England's Elite League side will travel to face Portugal on Friday 21 March at the Municipal Stadium in Leiria (16:00 GMT). They will then cross the border into Spain for an international against Switzerland, staged at the Marbella Football Centre on Monday 24 March (19:00 GMT).

The Young Lions currently top the table, unbeaten after six games with four wins and two draws.

At Under-19 level, **Kporha** has earned a place in the England squad for the first time, ahead of their UEFA European U19 Championship Qualifying triple-header against Wales, Türkiye and Portugal.

The announcements mean that Palace have England representatives in every age group from senior down to Under-16s, with a host of other [Academy international call-ups announced yesterday](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/academy/march-2025-international-call-ups-fixtures-results/).

Midfielder **Devenny** has earned his second senior call-up to the Northern Ireland squad ahead of their friendlies against Switzerland (Friday, 21st March, 19:45 GMT) and Sweden (Tuesday, 25th March, 18:00 GMT).

He previously made his debut for Michael O’Neills Northern Ireland side back in November as a late substitute against Luxembourg, shortly after his very own debut in Palace colours against Fulham.

Representing the United States once again are Palace duo **Richards** and **Turner.** The centre-back has been a stalwart in the defence recently, while Turner has enjoyed a 100% win rate so far in the four games he has played in cup competitions.

The pair will be on home soil in California, as they prepare for the CONCACAF Nations League Finals. They face Panama in the semi-final on Thursday, 20th March (23:00 GMT) and will face either Mexico or Canada in either the final or the third place play-off three days later (TBC).

And Colombian duo **Muñoz** and **Lerma** are also on international duty this month. The pair could represent their country when Colombia face Brazil in Brasília (Friday, 21st March, 00:45 GMT) and at home to Paraguay (Wednesday, 26th March, 00:00 GMT) in a World Cup qualifier double header.

Elise Hughes: The comeback

But football, like life, has its highs and lows. For Hughes, the lowest point came with the dreaded three-letter diagnosis: ACL, an injury she sustained in the first-half of Palace’s win away at Lewes on 21st April 2024.

Hughes said: “It’s a long journey, and it's obviously a journey that quite a few female football players go through now.

“I'm lucky enough to have an amazing medical team and the facilities here to help me get through, but yeah, this is where I spent every day in the summer, just to feel this moment again.”

It was a cruel twist of fate. She had been flying for Palace, leading the Barclays Women’s Championship Golden Boot race, and cementing herself as a pivotal figure for both club and country. Then, in a single moment, everything changed.

Hughes said: “You never think it's going to happen to you. For so long, I was always quite empathetic and sympathetic to people that had done it.

“But I never understood how they felt. And to be honest, I didn't want to understand how they felt.”

The reality hit quickly. Hughes, who had spent years working her way up through the ranks, suddenly found herself on the sidelines, navigating the gruelling road to recovery.

She said: “It was obviously really tough to take. The first few weeks were such a rollercoaster for me.

“It was like, ‘you’ve won the league, you’ve done your ACL, you’ve won all the individual awards,’ then you have your operation. And then it’s like learning to walk again.”

But Hughes is nothing if not resilient. She poured herself into rehab, sacrificing her summer to ensure she could return as quickly – and as strongly – as possible.

“It was just me and my physio for like May, June, July. And we smashed it out,” she said.

Now, the striker is on the other side of that journey. The hard work has paid off, and Hughes is back, ready to make her mark in Palace’s first-ever WSL campaign.

Hughes said: “Obviously when the team got promoted, I was like, well, I want to play as much part of the WSL as I can.

“And then little things along the way then obviously motivate me even more. And I say little things, but it’s like the massive summer that Wales have got ahead.”

Her return couldn’t be better timed. Wales are preparing for a historic summer as they look forward to their first-ever appearance at the UEFA Women’s Euros, and Hughes is eager to be part of it.

“Everything now more than ever... not that I was ever taking anything for granted before, but now when you suffer such a setback at such a stage of my career, I’m obviously more ambitious and more excited and raring to go than ever."

Beyond her own playing career, Hughes is committed to growing the women’s game. Her roots in Connah’s Quay in Northern Wales remain strong, and she’s actively involved in coaching the next generation.

She said: “It was because obviously my brother plays for Connah’s Quay, so that was how I first got involved with them, my local team, the local Cymru Academy.

“And I always wanted to be involved in other aspects of football because I’m so obsessed with it.

“So, it’s not always just playing, it was then like 'how can I be involved in other aspects?' And then it fell into coaching.”

Her work has helped expand opportunities for young female players in North Wales, an area historically dominated by men’s football.

“Connah’s Quay was quite dominated in boys’ football and men’s football at the time and then I was the first female staff member there, and I think it shined a light on the fact that women play football as well.

“Now there’s hundreds and hundreds of girls that train there every week, and they’ve obviously got the 19s scholarship programme and now the women’s team,” she said.

Her work has helped expand opportunities for young female players in North Wales, an area historically dominated by men’s football.

“Connah’s Quay was quite dominated in boys’ football and men’s football at the time and then I was the first female staff member there, and I think it shined a light on the fact that women play football as well.

“Now there’s hundreds and hundreds of girls that train there every week, and they’ve obviously got the 19s scholarship programme and now the women’s team,” she said.

Now, with her return to fitness, Hughes is focused on making up for lost time. She’s ready to play her part in Palace’s Barclays Women’s Super League campaign and hopefully secure a spot in the Wales squad for this summer’s Euro 2025 tournament.

She said: “It’s actually a perfect time for me to return. I’ve got the last stretch of the season and then hopefully a busy footballing summer as well.”

For Hughes, the journey has been anything but smooth. But if there’s one thing she’s proven, it’s that she’s more than capable of overcoming any challenge that comes her way.

Palace and Wales fans alike will be thrilled to see her back where she belongs: on the pitch, putting the ball in the back of the net.

This is the penultimate away fixture for the young Eagles, where they will look to dethrone the current reigning champions.
