100 Years of Selhurst Park

## From Academy to Premier League

> Having joined the Palace Academy from Brentford in 2016, Tyrick Mitchell rose to prominence rapidly at Palace and set the record for the youngest-ever player to make 100 Premier League appearances for the club.

Mitchell was a regular in both of Palace's Under-18 and Under-23 Professional Development League South winning teams in 2017/18 as he spent a second campaign featuring at both levels.

A recruit from Brentford at the end of the 2015/16 season, Mitchell, an attacking left-back with bundles of pace, impressed sufficiently for the Academy side to be handed a chance with the Development team in 2016. He used that experience to his advantage in 17/18 as he helped his two teams to silverware.

In 2018/19, Mitchell was a regular fixture in Richard Shaw's U23s team and joined the first-team on their pre-season tour in the summer of 2019.

After returning from an injury sustained while on tour, Mitchell made several first-team squads and earned his Premier League debut against Leicester City in July 2020. He went on to secure his first Premier League start by playing the full 90 minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In April 2021, he signed a contract extension through til the end of 2024/25. Mitchell then followed this up with his first goal and assist for the Eagles, as helped the side to a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa in May 2021.

His performances throughout 21/22 saw him earn a senior England call-up for the first time in March 2022, making his debut in a 2-1 win over Switzerland.

Mitchell was nearly ever-present in 2022/23, featuring for Palace in 38 out of a possible 41 games in all competitions. He made his 100th appearance in red and blue against Tottenham Hotspur towards the end of the campaign and was also awarded the PFA Community Champion Award for his support for the Palace for Life Foundation.

He was again so close to being ever-present in 2023/24, this time only missing a single game through injury. Nevertheless, he continued to make the left-back position his own, and even stepping further forward as a left wing-back under new manager Oliver Glasner. 

The 2023/24 campaign also saw the best attacking returns for Mitchell, with two goals and three assists.

Eddie talks through his debut for Palace

Palace’s newest No. 9 – a deadline-day arrival from Arsenal – made his first appearance in the red and blue against Leicester City on Saturday and was a lively presence throughout, often dropping deep and coming close to scoring on several occasions.

While the Eagles in the end required a stoppage-time penalty from Jean-Philippe Mateta to claim a 2-2 draw and a point, Nketiah saw both positives and negatives in the display.

The forward told Palace TV: “I'm really happy to make my debut, [but] really disappointed not to get the three points. 

“I think the team pushed, we had some good chances, we deserved it, so yes, I think it's a good start, and one to build on. There's more to come for myself, and definitely more to come from the team. 

“I felt good. Obviously it's my first 90 minutes in quite a while, so it was good to get back out there. Like I said, I'm nowhere near at my best, I know I'm going to keep getting better, and I'm sure I can help the team as things go on.

“[We made] a disappointing start, but I think it [coming back] showed the character. We kept going, even when we came back out and conceded after half-time. I think we all rallied each other up. 

“I tried to keep everyone positive because I knew the way we were playing, we're going to create chances, we're going to get goals. Like I said, obviously it’s not the ideal three points, but we'll build on it, we'll take the point, and make sure we're better next game.”

On his first fortnight at Palace, Nketiah added: “It’s been really enjoyable for myself. I've been really pushed physically to keep improving, keep getting fitter, and yes, it was really nice to be at Selhurst Park and on the receiving end of the fans’ support this time. 

“I was lively today and I could do a lot more, and with the support of the fans, I'm sure I'll reach the levels I know I can get to.”

Mateta on late comeback against Foxes

The Frenchman was once again at the double at Selhurst Park – his 15th goal in his last 10 matches in SE25 in all competitions – as Palace fought back from a two-goal deficit to claim a point against a spirited Foxes side.

While Mateta wanted a win – saying of a draw “it’s very important, but we need this win” – he also saw the value in Palace’s strong second-half fightback.

“It was very important for us coming here to win this game,” he explained. “They scored the second goal early in the second-half and we just fought for the last goal.

“They scored early in the second-half and I think that killed us a little bit, but we came back and we were happy to take this point.”

On his first goal, which was initially ruled out for offside before a VAR review awarded it, Mateta admitted: “I didn’t see behind me but in front of me I thought I was just off – but I was not, and I was happy!  I made the run, and anything can happen.”

And on his second – an injury-time penalty – he smiled: “I just wanted to score. I know the Leicester keeper and player tried to get in my head, so that’s why I stayed calm.

“I just focused and I just wanted to score, you know, and I scored.

“I’m very happy. I was coming back from a big tournament \[the summer Olympic Games with France\] – I played every game and I came back and played straight \[away\]. I’m still human, I was tired, but it’s coming.”

Mateta was also pleased with his early link-up with debutant Eddie Nketiah, saying: “He’s a very good player from Arsenal, and will understand quick the philosophy.

“He played very well. He gave everything and we need to work with him, and all the team, and we’ll put in the work.

“We still have to work. They \[the new Palace players\] still need the philosophy of the gaffer, and we’ll work – 100 percent we’ll work.”

Glasner speaks about team spirit

The manager told Palace TV: “It was especially mentally a very tough game, because being down 1-0 and then at half-time we said: ‘OK, now we want to keep going and we know we will create chances’ and it's 2-0, one minute later.

“Then, with the great support from the stand, we had a very good belief today, and with a great impact also from our subs, we came back. I think it's a compliment for the team for this comeback.

“We know we have to improve some parts of the game – especially we conceded the goals too easily. It's not that we are under pressure and then they score, but when we talk about the second goal, it's a 60-yard kick from the goalkeeper, and it bounced next to our box, and then we have a four against three in the box, but we conceded a goal.

“This is what we have to improve, because we know we are always able to create chances, we are always able to score goals, but also having this consequence in defending. This is not a problem of our structure, but it's just having this consequence, and this is what we will do.

“I mentioned it at the press conference: for me, it's like a restart with many new players, so I really appreciate how the togetherness was today, and so the basement is built. We are not happy with the point, but I'm really pleased and delighted with the spirit and the character of the players again.”

Maxence Lacroix and Eddie Nketiah both made their Crystal Palace debuts against Leicester, with Glasner noting: “Maxence was solid, and also we could see that it was his first competitive game for a very long time in some parts, but he was solid.

“Eddie showed what he showed during training, what we expected from him: he always can threaten the goal. He was a little bit unlucky with the two or three finishes he had, but he had good movements, and also before the very important penalty, he made this run and blocked the defender, and Ismaïla \[Sarr\] also had a lot of passion getting this ball with his pace, and getting this penalty.

“I think it was okay. I think the whole game is okay, but we need to be good to win the games, so when you play okay, it's a draw, and now it's our job to improve and then to play well, then we will \[win\] more, and when we will be excellent, then we win a lot.”

Glasner also credit the role of the Selhurst Park support in Palace’s second-half comeback, noting: “We know that we can rely on our fans, and this gives us always a very good feeling.

“I think I mentioned it several times, and also last season, if you're 4-0 up or 5-0 up, then it's easy to be loud as a fan, but when you're 2-0 down, then you need the support.

“The players could feel the support, and they played forward again and scored the very important first goal, quick after their second.

“And also it's visa versa: it's from the players to the stand, and from the stand to the players, so it was a great togetherness again, otherwise it's not possible to come back like this, and so thank you to our fans.

“We will need them at QPR on Tuesday as well, and the basement is built, but we have to work hard.”
