## Our Senegalese Sarr

> Ismaïla Sarr became the club’s third signing of the 2024/25 summer transfer window after joining on a five-year deal from Olympique de Marseille.

The 26-year-old attacker possesses plenty of experience of English football, having spent four years at Watford – recording 34 goals and 22 assists in 131 games – prior to joining Marseille, whom he helped reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League last season.

Sarr's career began in French football with Metz, before moving to Rennes and leading the club into Europe, as well as winning their first Coupe de France in almost half a century.

At international level, he has been a mainstay of the Senegal national side, earning 64 caps, scoring 13 goals and winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.

His career has also been defined by his eye for the spectacular, having won Goal of the Season awards in both the Football League and the Europa League.

The Eagles made it six games on the road in the league without defeat, with an excellent team performance, topped off with two superbly worked goals.

The win moves Palace up to 14th in the league table, and continues a fine start to 2025 for Oliver Glasner’s team.

It was the Foxes who had the first sight of goal on a chilly night in the East Midlands, Jamie Vardy forcing an alert save from Dean Henderson at his near post.

The same player fired a volley just past the post only a minute later, with the hosts out to make a fast start.

But Palace did well after those two nervy moments early on, and managed to grow into a tight first-half.

Will Hughes was often heavily involved, going to ground close to the penalty area, only for appeals to be waved away.

His ability to find Ebere Eze and Ismaila Sarr in dangerous positions offered hope, but at the other end Henderson had to make a superb save one-on-one against Vardy.

Replays showed the former England forward may have been offside, but Palace’s No. 1 didn’t know and was sharp to deny him from close range.

Palace’s early rhythm wasn’t helped by an enforced change that saw Jefferson Lerma depart, replaced by Cheick Doucoure.

But the Eagles did have a huge chance just before the half-hour mark. Daniel Munoz won the ball high up the pitch with an aggressive press.

The ball fell for Mateta not far the Leicester goal, but sadly he skewed his shot over the bar.

At the other end, James Justin went close for the hosts, his dipping free-kick only just wide of Henderson’s post.

But it was Palace who ended the first-half stronger, Hughes coming only millimetres away from scoring just before the interval.

Mateta’s low cross fell to Tyrick Mitchell, whose effort was blocked – only for the ball to fall for Hughes. The Eagles midfielder caught the ball nicely, but his effort went just over the bar.

But the moment of magic would come just after the break, Mateta running onto Sarr’s through ball after the winger drove at the heart of the Leicester defence before slipping through the perfect pass.

The French forward coolly rounded Jakub Stolarczyk before rolling the ball into an empty net  - for his ninth goal of the season.

Suddenly confidence was flowing through the Eagles. A wonderful team move ended with Eze picking out the overlapping Mitchell at the back post - only a good save from Stolarczyk preventing Palace from doubling their lead.

Leicester made a triple substitution in an attempt to regain control, and started to threaten the Eagles goal again.

One of those brought on, Patson Daka, hit the crossbar with a dipping effort from outside the box, with Henderson only able to watch on. The lively Leicester forward also forced an excellent block from Chris Richards, as pressure began to build.

But it was Palace who got the all-important second goal. Eze’s free-kick was perfectly delivered for the onrushing Guehi to fire into the Leicester goal from close range.

There was still time for Mavididi to head narrowly wide from a late Foxes corner – but in truth the three points were never in doubt following the captain’s goal.

The final chance of the night went to Sarr, after he was teed up by Munoz. The save was made but it couldn’t spoil a near perfect away day for the Eagles.

Glasner on another away win

The Eagles were off the boil in the first 45 minutes at the King Power Stadium but, thanks to good work defensively and with Dean Henderson making some important saves, went in level at the break.

They emerged a more creative and clinical unit in the second-half and – following goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Marc Guéhi – finished as worthy winners as they rose to 14th in the Premier League table.

Glasner told Palace TV: “The best thing today is the result, and we're really pleased with the three points, with the clean sheet, with the goals we scored – but we can't be satisfied with the performance today. Especially the first-half was not good.

“We were lucky that it was a draw at half-time and then it was a little bit louder than usual in the dressing room, and the players showed a good reaction. But still, I think we can do better. 

“In the second-half, we created some chances and in the first-half, to be honest, almost nothing, and then we looked a little bit… everything looked so slow.

“But the players showed a good reaction, which shows again their great character, their great mentality, their great togetherness. And then we decided the game in the right moments, keeping the clean sheet, and now we go home, of course, being happy with three points.”

On the second-half itself, Glasner added: “I wouldn't say it's impressive – it was better. The goals were great and we just did what we wanted to do in a better way.

“We found our 10s in the pocket, but they also moved better. And when we see the first goal, then we need this dynamic because we knew when we find our players there, they drop with their defence and then we need runs in behind, like JP in this situation.

“I think in the first-half, we didn't even run in behind. We just always stopped and passing back and back and of course then you can't create chances or score goals. And this we did much better in the second half, but it's all about doing these runs, effort, and then you get the reward.

“We got the reward. Also very good defending, great set play, good communication between Ebs [Eze] and Marc and great pass, great finish. 

“Overall, again, it was important to win here, to come closer to the places in front of us and of course, to reduce the gap to the teams behind us – but also we have to be critical with us. We need a better performance than it was today.”


On Will Hughes, who impressed after returning to the starting line-up following a foot injury, Glasner noted: “Today also, to be fair, it was a little bit tricky because Jeff \[Lerma\] had to go off after 15 minutes feeling sick and we knew Will can't play 90 minutes after being out of training for two weeks.

“But yes, we wanted a left foot there also who can switch the side, because we knew we had an overload on the opposite side. And we need his aggressivity, we need his passing, his one, two touches. It's great.

“But after 60 minutes, he ran out of fuel. And so, yes, I think Daichi \[Kamada\] did really well also for getting structure into our game. It’s good that all the players are back now.”

Guéhi’s goal was his third of the season, and Glasner smiled: “Especially here in the Premier League, set-plays are a big issue and we are talking about it. Also, we didn't train in the last two days because it was recovery, but we showed them many clips and what we want to do.

“And I think now Trevoh \[Chalobah\] had three, Marc has three, Maxence Lacroix has one, Dani Muñoz has two. So, yes, we have many goals here. It helps us to win games, and this is what happened today.”

Palace extended their unbeaten away run in the Premier League to six matches with victory at the King Power Stadium – a club-record run in the competition, and their first such stretch in the top-flight since 1992.

On the travelling support, Glasner said: “It's unbelievable. We could see it was so foggy at the end, but our fans go everywhere: midweek, weekend, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

“Thank you very much for this great support again. I mentioned it at the beginning of the season, it's so important to have a great togetherness in the club, but also with our fans, and this is what they show every game at home and away.

“What we can do is \[make sure\] that they go back with a smile on their faces, and then showing the game and the result, and this is what the players did again.”

A middling first-half display paved the way for a clinical second, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Marc Guéhi providing accomplished finishes to seal the three points and lift Palace up to 14th in the table.

The fact that it came after a week when many of Palace’s players were sidelined with illness was only testament to their collective strength, Richards agreed.

The United States international said: “Yeah, we’ve had a few sicknesses throughout the last few weeks, but that's no excuse. We're a team that's very determined and we just want to play for each other. 

“Anytime we can step on the pitch, whether it's home or away, we want to make sure that we try to get a few points.

“At half-time we came in very disappointed with ourselves, but I guess the positive was it was probably one of the worst halves of football that we’ve played this season, so we could only go upwards from there

“The second-half started off still a bit slow, but we ended up getting a goal and then that changed the whole momentum. I think the boys up top did really well and then of course Marc, to finish the game off… it was a really impressive game today.”

Richards also spoke fondly of fellow defender Trevoh Chalobah, who returned to Chelsea after spending the first portion of season on loan at Palace.

“I think throughout this whole season we've had good players who are even better people, and Trevoh’s one of those people who kind of helped drive that culture we have in the group right now,” Richards reflected. 

“He will be missed, but life goes on without him, so now it's time for people all around the team to step up one more step, and then hopefully we can continue this run.”


Chris Richards hailed Crystal Palace’s strength as a unit after a 2-0 win over Leicester City made it a club-record six Premier League away matches without defeat in a row.
