The best images from a spectacular matchday at Selhurst Park

The Eagles made history in Cyprus three weeks ago today, winning out 2-1 in extra-time to become the first English debutants in Europe to reach the quarter-finals of a continental competition since 1979.

That result set up a tie with Serie A side Fiorentina – who have reached two finals and one semi-final across the Conference League’s three seasons – and Glasner has elected to make three changes to his starting XI for the first leg in SE25 tonight.

Captain **Dean Henderson**, ill for the win in Cyprus, returns between the posts, with Walter Benítez among the substitutes tonight.

Another injured absentee that night, **Daniel Muñoz**, returns at right wing-back following the international break, in place of Brennan Johnson.

Up front, meanwhile, Jørgen Strand Larsen is suspended due to accumulation of yellow cards (with three required to trigger a one-match suspension) – meaning **Jean-Philippe Mateta** makes his first Palace start since 25th January against Chelsea.

According to competition rules, three of Palace’s starting side – Jaydee Canvot, Maxence Lacroix and Adam Wharton – could be suspended for next week’s second leg in Florence, should they pick up a booking tonight.

All yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals, and are not carried forward to the semi-finals.

Palace are the fifth English side to reach this stage of the Conference League – following Leicester City, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Chelsea – with all four previous teams having gone on to win their respective ties.

**Fiorentina** make two changes to the starting XI which scraped a 1-0 win – albeit with 10 men – away at Verona on Saturday.

**Roberto Piccoli** – who has three goals in eight Conference League games so far this season – replaces injured top scorer Moise Kean up front, whilst defender **Dodô** comes into the back line in place of Pietro Comuzzo, who drops to the bench.

The Italian side do possess a formidable historical record in this competition, however – in the Round of 16, *La Viola* became the first club to play 50 matches in the Conference League, and they have lost just four of their 22 European quarter-final ties overall.

ACF Fiorentina arrive at Selhurst Park in-form and confident. 

After a difficult start to the season, savvy tactical changes to begin the calendar year have brought strong results to *La Viola*. 

Using this newfound success and confidence, Fiorentina are now pushing to reach their fourth consecutive UEFA Conference League semi-final – and what could be a third final – hoping to finally lift the trophy.

### A poor start

Fiorentina began the season as an aggressive five-at-the-back side who defended high up the pitch to win the ball back early. Unfortunately, this system simply didn’t work.

New manager Paolo Vanoli was brought in on the 7th November 2025, but little changed – both tactically and in the team’s results – during his first two months. 

Fiorentina continued to deploy a back five and found themselves bottom-of-the-table in Serie A on New Year's Day.

Issues existed both in attack and defence. In attack, *La Viola* could not finish quality chances. Despite ranking sixth in xG for Serie A (25.2), they ranked 16th in Goals (17) – the most drastic underperformance in the league. 

Fiorentina were not struggling to create chances, they were struggling to finish them. 

Defensively, Fiorentina’s 2025 was marked by poor organisation. Too many holes were left behind the press and opponents exploited these often.

The Viola conceded the most goals (28) in Serie A through 2025 and ranked 16th in xGA (27.9). Similar GA and xGA show Fiorentina were not “unfortunate,” but simply conceded too many chances – at least to begin with.

### 2026: The 'Lightbulb' Moment

In Fiorentina’s first match of2026, Vanoli switched things up, utilising a back four. 

Aside from the formation shift, he also tampered with the aggression of his side. 

*La Viola* went from a passes per defensive action (PPDA) of 10.1 – sixth most-active – in 2025 to a PPDA of 15.2 in 2026. This far more patient approach – ranking 17th in PPDA for Serie A – allowed for more organisation and discipline out of possession. 

This is not a low block, however – Fiorentina still set up high on the pitch (eighth in Serie A). 

Overall, Fiorentina massively improved their defensive record – going from 20th to ninth in goals allowed.

While chance creation – shown below by xG – increased minimally, Fiorentina greatly improved their clinical ability, improving their finishing rate by 62.5%. 

The style of these chances changed as well. In 2025, Fiorentina played narrow and preferred to build centrally. 

In 2026, they use width more often and give wide players more creative responsibilities. Improved finishing, plus an organised defence, has led to Fiorentina gaining three times as many points-per-match in Serie A for 2026, winning six and drawing four of their 13 league matches to move up to five points outside the relegation zone.

### Set-piece issues

Fiorentina have shown poor finishing from set-pieces. Despite generating the third-most xG from set pieces in Serie A (11.7), they rank just 19th in goals scored (five). 

This same issue has been true in Conference League, where Fiorentina rank 2nd in xG via set-pieces but rank just 22nd in set-piece goals (two).

Defending set-pieces has also been issue for Fiorentina as well, as they have allowed the third-most goals and xG from dead-ball situations in Serie A.

#### One to watch

Italy international **Nicolò Fagioli** is the driving force of Fiorentina’s midfield and has thrived following their formation shift.

With an extra midfielder to handle defensive work, Fagioli can focus on ball progression and creative play. 

He ranks in the 88th percentile in UECL (95th in Serie A) for big chances created and the 98th percentile (85th in Serie A) for expected assists (xA).

Alternatively, **if you have a barcode on your ticket**, you can show this to the camera at the bottom of the screen to scan your ticket and enter.

These new readers are designed to make supporters' entrance to the ground quicker and smoother.

### Bag policy

Supporters are permitted to bring bags into Selhurst Park, **provided that they are small enough to fit safely beneath your seat.**

Larger bags will need to be dropped off at the **dedicated bag drop facility** located in the main car park, at the information point. This facility will be managed by the Crystal Palace staff and is free of charge.

Please note that supporters will be required to remove all lids from bottles of 500ml or less before entering Selhurst Park. Bottles over 500ml are not permitted.

### Pre-match light show

**Supporters are advised to arrive early to enjoy the full pre-match experience.**

Before the entrance of the two teams, at around **19:50-19:55 BST,** there will be a light show containing flashing images, lights and entertainment.

Supporters will receive notice prior to the light show commencing. **Any supporters who suffer from light sensitivity should head to the concourses if affected.**

### Conduct

**Crystal Palace would like to remind supporters that acts of discrimination, including inappropriate chanting, violence and entering the field of play, are criminal offences – which can result in criminal convictions and banning orders.**

As a club, we are clear that everyone is welcome at Palace. **We will not tolerate racial or homophobic chants or discriminating comments** towards a particular individual, or group of individuals, at Selhurst Park.

The Manager speaks on another European win 

Playing their first-ever European quarter-final, Glasner’s Palace thrived off the energy of an electric Selhurst Park, scoring three times without reply – through Jean-Philippe Mateta, Tyrick Mitchell and Ismaïla Sarr – to take command of the occasion.

Fiorentina had their moments and did hit the crossbar in the early stages of the second-half, but Palace were the dominant side in the first leg, as Glasner recognised at full-time.

“More important for me was the performance today,” the Manager said, “especially in the first-half, and let's say the last 20 or 25 minutes. 

“It was a really fantastic performance with great power, really playing well, making pressure and always attacking the box, [playing] the ball in behind. I think the second goal was like this with Dani Muñoz, with Daichi [Kamada]’s ball.

“This was the plan. We knew that they are very, very compact, but then also we were really going in behind and creating so many chances. It was really great to see. 

“But on the other side, we also have seen, I think for maybe the 15 or 20 minutes after half-time, how good Fiorentina is in this situation, and we needed the crossbar and Dean Henderson once. 

"Fiorentina started more aggressive in the second-half. We lost the ball too quickly. But overall, the energy today here at Selhurst, with our fans, from the team, was great. I'm really pleased with what I have seen today.

“The first step is made, but we have to make the second in Florence next week.”

It was a special atmosphere and a special performance

On the role that Selhurst Park played in the success, Glasner added: "I think the [fixture break] was important for everyone, to be honest. Today it was from the start. It was a different atmosphere here at Selhurst from the team, I said before.

"It's a pleasure for everybody as long as the European journey lasts. And also, of course, Fiorentina is a big name, Italian football has a big name, so everybody expected a very, very tight game today, whereas in the last games it felt like everybody expected a clear win. The circumstances were different, so I think all of this created this special atmosphere today.

"And I think this is the special atmosphere we need. Always, playing in European competitions is always something special, especially when you have it the first time in your club's history – and today I could feel that there was something special. 

"It was a special atmosphere and a special performance.

"I hope we will have still many of these nights, not just in Europe. In three days, we play Newcastle here and I think it will be the same. Hopefully it's the same atmosphere.

I'm always enjoying and appreciating my job and being part of such great football games and such great atmospheres. Because, to be honest, that's one of the reasons why I'm a Manager. Again, I hope that we can have more nights and evenings and games like this.

"But it was just the first step. It's not done. It's half-time. We had a good game. We have the lead, but we still have a game to play in Florence, and I expect them to play like they started the second-half, more aggressive and trying to get the turnaround."

We kept our heads up and knew that we could turn the momentum again

After a dominant first-half display, Palace’s second-half performance was more about reestablishing control amidst Fiorentina’s heavy spell of pressure following the break.

Glasner recognised: “We lost the balls too easily and too quickly, and that always means the game was too wild – so it was up and down.

“Then, when you’re 2-0 up, you should get more control, and I think we had four or five easy ball losses, and that gave the momentum to Fiorentina. 

“We also have to respect playing a very good team from Italy, that they would have maybe 15 minutes the momentum on their side.

“But we didn't get frustrated. We kept our heads up and knew that we could turn the momentum again, and so that's what we did.

“At the end, I think we were close to scoring the fourth goal – and it was a great performance.”


Oliver Glasner hailed Crystal Palace’s performance in defeating Fiorentina 3-0 on Thursday evening – and praised Selhurst Park's role in achieving that – while noting that the UEFA Conference League quarter-final is only at its halfway mark.

Glasner: The first step is made

Richards played his part in a superb Palace shutout, while goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta, Tyrick Mitchell and Ismaïla Sarr at the other end gave the Eagles a healthy first leg advantage to take to Tuscany next week.

The Serie A side did push numbers forward in a bid to get back in the game, but Richards along with defensive pair Jaydee Canvot and Maxence Lacroix, barely put a foot wrong all night.

After the win Richards told TNT Sports: "Of course we want to get to the final, but we understand it's one game at a time.  

"So I think it'd be dumb to say that we're already looking at the next opponent [in the semi-final].

"Again, we have a whole other leg still to play and it's going to be a hostile environment in Fiorentina. We understand that we have to go and get a win there.

"We always focus on making sure that we maintain a clean sheet because it allows the people up front to do what they need to do. 

"Defence isn't always, you know, the most beautiful thing to do! But whenever you get a clean sheet, it always helps the team."

 We only scored three today, but I think it could have been a lot more

Mateta, Sarr and their fellow forward Evann Guessand particularly excelled, barely giving the Fiorentina defence time to settle, amidst a wonderful Selhurst Park atmosphere. 

And Richards was quick to praise the efforts of the Eagles' attack. 

"Those guys up top, they make our job easy," he added. "Whenever they get on the ball, they always create some sort of magic. 

"And we only scored three today, but I think it could have been a lot more, so kudos to them. 

"I know that in the next leg we're going to get a few more."

The USA international, who captained his country during the recent international break, also wanted to emphasise the key role Oliver Glasner has played in changing the mentality of the the club, with the Eagles now chasing a third major trophy in the space of 12 months.

"The number one thing that he's instilled since he came in is that he wants to kind of change the mentality of Palace," he said.

"He wants to make this a club that wins trophies and I think even with the people that he brought, not just staff, but players as well, it's just changed the mentality. 

"We're all kind of 'drinking the Kool-Aid' like we say back home. So we want to win more trophies and that's exactly what we plan on doing."

Chris Richards refused to get carried away after Palace cruised past Fiorentina with a dominant first leg display in their UEFA Conference League quarter-final.

Richards: We understand we have to go again

Jean-Philippe Mateta set the Eagles on their way by tucking home a penalty after Evann Guessand was hauled down in the box. 

And Tyrick Mitchell gave Palace a two-goal cushion not long after. The wing-back got his second European goal of the campaign by tucking home from close range when Mateta caused further chaos in the penalty area.

And a perfect night was complete when Sarr's excellent header in the dying minutes made it 3-0 as Palace turned on the style.

In front of a rapturous Selhurst Park, who did not stop singing for a moment throughout, Palace produced a dominant first-half display to take control of the first leg – and potentially the tie as a whole.

Mateta’s penalty – after Evann Guessand was fouled inside the box – and Mitchell’s instinctive fininsh– after Mateta had a close-range effort saved by David de Gea – put Palace two goals to the good by the break.

By contrast, the second-half was one more about retaining control of the contest and, although Fiorentina did strike the crossbar through Giovanni Fabbian, there was momentum enough for Sarr to thump a downwards header beyond de Gea in stoppage time.

Palace will now take a three-goal lead to Florence for the second leg and continue their sensational European debut campaign.

Exactly three weeks to the day since Crystal Palace became the first English team to – in their debut European season – reach the quarter-finals since 1979, Selhurst Park was primed for another shot at history.

Having reached two finals and one semi-final in the three previous iterations of the UEFA Conference League, however – contributing to an impressive record of 10 wins in 11 European quarter-final victories – Fiorentina possessed pedigree of a different calibre to any opponent the Eagles had faced so far.

Palace made three changes to their starting XI from the side which won in Cyprus, with Dean Henderson and Daniel Muñoz – back from illness and injury respectively – returning to the starting XI, and Jean-Philippe Mateta making his first start since 25th January.

The proceedings began with a rousing atmosphere from well before kick-off, Selhurst awash with a heady buzz of anticipation, a dash of nerves – and excitement.

A pre-match supporter display from the Holmesdale Fanatics saw the famous red and blue beamed spectacularly across the continent – and then, it was time for the action to begin.

Manager Oliver Glasner had spoken in the build-up to the match about the strength and atmosphere of the week’s training in the build-up – and that transpired on the pitch in a swashbuckling first-half display.

It was the Serie A side who threatened in the opening seconds through Jack Harrison’s low ball in – Chris Richards meeting it with an important block tackle – but from then on, the Eagles took control.

The first clear opportunity saw Muñoz pull into space on the right and, sizing up his man, swing in a high out-swinger which Mateta attacked. The Frenchman leapt high but, on the stretch, could not meet it cleanly enough to direct on target.

Robin Gosens then first wide first-time for Fiorentina from the edge of the box – his effort never truly threatening Dean Henderson – before Muñoz was at it again soon after, his fizzed cross prodded goalwards instinctively by Evann Guessand; the ball’s spin, upon landing, took it just wide of the far post.

The possession, the territory and the threat were all Palace’s.

On the 20-minute mark, Ismaïla Sarr turned and ran menacingly at the Fiorentina defence. 

As The Violets backed off, Sarr slipped in Guessand on the overlap; the Ivorian fired wide, but was caught by defender Dodô on the follow-through. A penalty was awarded and, after a VAR check, confirmed, and up stepped Mateta.

The Frenchman’s last goal had been on New Year’s Day against Fulham – and he soon had Selhurst partying once more, stepping up to send David de Gea sprawling the wrong way from 12 yards.

Yet Palace wanted – demanded – more. The attacks kept on coming and, seven minutes later, the Eagles doubled their lead.

A delightful lofted pass from Daichi Kamada found Muñoz making a dart in behind the defence. The Colombian, leaning back, did wonderfully to improvise a cross towards the unmarked Mateta, who prodded goalwards.

De Gea’s save was impressive – but he could do nothing to prevent Tyrick Mitchell steamrolling in to divert the ball back across the keeper for his second goal of the European campaign.

A 2-0 lead was the least the Eagles deserved, and they would see late first-half efforts come close through both Maxence Lacroix from a corner kick and – after drifting past two tackles and cutting inside – Jaydee Canvot.

When the half-time whistled sounded, it did so to appreciation from all four corners of Selhurst.

Fiorentina, to their credit, came out fighting in the second-half.

Not long after the restart, Giovanni Fabbian – a lively presence for La Viola in the first-half – struck the top of the crossbar with a first-time effort from Dodô’s pull-back.

Up the other end, Guessand continued to show his class, a clipped ball towards the back post finding Kamada who cut inside and shot powerfully, yet into the side-netting.

Not long after, Henderson was called into action for the first time, plunging low to his left to prevent Roberto Piccoli’s near-post effort from creeping into the bottom corner.

With The Violets beginning to enjoy greater possession, and Guessand appearing to pick up a knock, Glasner summoned for Yéremy Pino from the bench to help the Eagles regain their control.

And the change appeared to have the desired effect, as the tempo of the game settled and Pino began to see plenty of the ball.

For the next chapter of the contest, clear opportunities began to dry up – but it was Sarr who was next to go close with a quarter-of-an-hour left on the clock as he rose to head Muñoz’s standing cross goalwards, only to see his effort loop beyond the far stick.

Two minutes later, Sarr turned creator, found in space by a lovely pass from Pino. The No. 7 stood it up to the far post where Mateta would have fancied himself to beat De Gea, yet his contact was not firm enough to direct the ball on target.

Lerma was next to emerge from the bench, replacing Mateta – who came off to warm applause – as Glasner shored up his midfield, with Sarr moving up top and Kamada pushed further forwards.

There was another opportunity for Palace to extend their lead on 88 minutes, Pino earning a rendition of his popular chant with a clever run from deep to tee up Sarr; his effort across goal was blocked by a sliding defender.

But the cherry was well and truly added to the cake by Sarr in the first minute of injury time, the forward peeling away at the back post to meet Kamada's delivery and – heading down into the ground, the ball skipping up – into the top corner.

Commence scenes of jubilation.

It could have gotten even better seconds after the restart, Pino running clear to beat De Gea with a delicate lob – but one which, while dropping, gave Dodo the chance to clear off the line.

Moments later, the Spaniard came within inches of tapping in Muñoz’s ball across the six-yard box.

No matter. A three-goal lead to take to Italy next week? Palace will certainly take that.
