### EAGLE-EYED REVIEW

Palace Under-21s were beaten 2-0 by in-form Nottingham Forest on Good Friday, missing the chance to mathematically secure their Premier League 2 play-off place at the Nigel Doughty Academy – a spot they have since confirmed thanks to favourable results elsewhere.

The defeat ended a three-match unbeaten run, which included impressive wins over Wolves, Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool, the latter a standout 5-1 victory against one of the division’s form sides.

Powell’s side sit 13th in Premier League 2 on 28 points, level with Leicester City. Victory in the final round would lift them as high as ninth – just short of the top eight required for a home tie in the round of 16 – but a higher finish would still offer a more favourable draw in the seeded bracket, with first facing 16th, second facing 15th, and so on.

Despite recent setbacks, Palace remain well placed heading into the final round of fixtures and will look to finish as high as possible ahead of the PL2 elimination play-offs.

### INTO THE PL2 PLAY-OFFS

Palace Under-21s have secured a place in the Premier League 2 play-offs for the third consecutive season, qualifying with a game to spare.

Under the revamped 29-team format, each side plays 20 regular-season fixtures, with the top 16 progressing to a single-elimination play-off. Higher-ranked teams earn home advantage, and a top-16 finish also secures qualification for next season’s Premier League International Cup.

Palace sealed their place following favourable results elsewhere and, while a top-eight finish – and with it a home tie in the round of 16 – is no longer attainable, they will still aim to finish as high as possible to secure a more favourable position in the seeded bracket.

### OUR OPPONENTS - ARSENAL U21s

Arsenal have already secured their place in the Premier League 2 play-offs, with qualification confirmed by results elsewhere earlier in the week. A 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday kept their slim hopes of a top-eight finish alive heading into the final round of fixtures.

The Gunners sit 11th on 29 points and could still break into the top eight with victory over Palace, though it would require a significant swing in goal difference and a heavy defeat for North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Last season, the Gunners enjoyed a dramatic run in the competition. A late penalty secured a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the round of 16, but their campaign came to an end in the quarter-finals, where eventual champions Manchester City struck late to force extra time before finding a winner.

Despite the win over West Brom, Under-21s head coach Max Porter was candid in his assessment of his side’s performance and the standards required ahead of facing Palace. “I’m going to be totally honest, we did not perform well,” he admitted. “We had a spell where we looked more like ourselves, and we scored a good goal, but either side of that we weren’t at the level.”

Porter highlighted issues in possession as a key area for improvement, adding: “We had too many cheap giveaways and too many poor decisions. Without the ball, we actually impressed, but with it we need to be far better.”

Looking ahead, he made clear what he expects from his side: “The main thing for us is to go there and put on a performance more like us. If we perform better, we give ourselves a much better chance of winning.”

Arsenal’s academy continues to be one of the most productive in English football, consistently supplying players to the senior squad. Ethan Nwaneri made headlines as the youngest player in Premier League history when he debuted at just 15, while Myles Lewis-Skelly has since established himself as a regular part of the first-team setup.

More recently, Max Dowman has followed that pathway, becoming the second-youngest player to feature in the competition. Their progression underlines the strength of Arsenal’s development pathway, with a clear route from academy football to senior opportunities at the highest level.

Arsenal’s recent form has been mixed, with just one win in their last five matches, placing them towards the lower end of the form table across the 29 Category One academies. Their away record has been similarly inconsistent, with two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five on the road, conceding 13 goals in that time.

Reflecting on their latest performance, Porter acknowledged that his side fell short of their usual standards despite securing the result. He noted that while there were brief spells of quality, overall execution and decision-making on the ball must improve, with defensive resilience having been key to their victory.

### KEY PLAYER – DEMIANE AGUSTIEN

Demiane Agustien joined Arsenal from Derby County in July 2025 after impressing at academy level with the Midlands club.

The son of former Premier League midfielder Kemy Agustien, he is a versatile and creative player capable of operating in multiple roles across midfield. After featuring heavily during pre-season, he made his debut in a narrow defeat to Fulham and has continued to develop throughout the campaign, scoring in the recent win over West Brom.

### THE GAFFER – MAX PORTER

Max Porter was appointed as Arsenal’s Under-21s head coach ahead of the current season, following Mehmet Ali’s departure to Brentford.

A former professional with experience across the Football League and non-league, Porter has been part of Arsenal’s academy setup since 2017. He progressed through a number of coaching roles, from Under-9s level up to Under-19s, before stepping into the Under-21s role.

Having previously worked closely with the group as assistant, he now leads the side with support from professional development phase lead coach Ken Gillard, continuing Arsenal’s strong emphasis on youth development.

Glenn Murray had netted Palace’s opening goal when he headed the Eagles in front minutes into the second-half – from a deflected Bolasie cross, of all sources – but then Palace's wing wizard pulled out all the tricks to set the travelling Palace faithful into raptures.

Scoring three times in just five second-half minutes, Bolasie registered what remains the club's fastest-ever hat-trick in the top-flight – and first during the Premier League era (with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring our second, against Aston Villa, on the final day of 2023/24).

Scott Dann lifted the ball in towards Murray and his flick on found Bolasie (51) whose blistering turn of pace saw him away from the ponderous Sunderland back line. Costel Pantilimon came rushing out, but Bolasie slotted the ball under the giant with ease.

His first was a show of pace and a clever finish; his second an audacious piece of control and a cute lofted finish; and his third was a show of sheer persistence. All three strikes were top-drawer.

For a team that had collected just three wins by Christmas, overcoming a rival 4-1 in the second season of top-flight football was a landmark moment for the Eagles, in a campaign they would ultimately end in 10th place under Alan Pardew.

Pardew, who had taken the decision to move Bolasie up top, suggested that Palace could have had things even better. He told the BBC: "In some ways the scoreline doesn’t reflect the game, it should be a bit more emphatic than it is.

"Our fans were singing: ‘It’s like watching Brazil,’ and it was today! I’d agree with that."

The victory saw Palace move past the magical 40-point mark with six games left of the season – Premier League status assured in some style.

One of the club’s most emphatic victories, Crystal Palace swept the floor with a struggling Sunderland side on this day in 2015, as Yannick Bolasie bagged an 11-minute hat-trick to secure the Eagles their eighth league win in 12 matches.

*We backed that up with a confident 3–1 win over Birmingham City at the VBS, with first-team winger Romain Esse starring with a goal – including a stunning curling strike from outside the box – and two assists.*

*A comfortable 2–0 win away at Aston Villa on Halloween marked what U21s Head Coach Darren Powell called one of our "most complete performances of the season," with goals from centre-back George King and Zach Marsh.*

*In our final Premier League 2 Division One fixture of 2025 against Stoke City at the Crystal Palace Academy, Kaden Rodney’s emphatic stoppage-time penalty earned a hard-fought 2–2 draw, showcasing his ice-cold composure under pressure.*

*Towards the start of the new year at the Palace Academy, we produced a scintillating 6–0 win over Derby County, with six different goalscorers. First-team defender Chadi Riad opened the scoring inside two minutes, while Craig Farquhar marked his return after more than 18 months out with a goal.*

*A statement 2–1 victory over previously unbeaten, title-chasing Fulham – who were on a 13-game unbeaten PL2 run – saw Seb Williams score a crisp half-volley, while Rio Cardines, returning to U21s action after injury, added a composed low finish to seal the win at the VBS.*

*On a sunny Saturday in early March, we were held to a 2–2 draw by a resolute Wolverhampton Wanderers side at the Academy, with Jemiah Umolua netting a lovely close-range half-volley.*

*Just before the international break, a five-star display saw us sweep aside 2026’s in-form Liverpool 5–1, boosting our play-off hopes with just two games remaining.*

*Finally, a 2-0 defeat to in-form Nottingham Forest on Good Friday denied the young Eagles the chance to mathematically secure a play-off spot at that stage, but the side remained firmly in contention.*

#### **Shakhtar treble sees off AZ**

The prospect of Palace reuniting with league phase opponents AZ Alkmaar in the semi-finals now seems remote after the first legs.

AZ, who currently lie sixth in the Dutch league, were comfortably beaten by Shakhtar Donetsk in Krakow, thanks to three goals in 11 second-half minutes.

Attacking midfielder Pedrinho went close in the second half when his curling free-kick crashed off the woodwork but he pounced on a loose ball to fire an unstoppable effort in off the bar for the opener.

With AZ then trying to push numbers forward to get back level, they were hit with two quickfire sucker punches.

Alisson Santana netted twice in three minutes to have the Ukrainian side a 3-0 lead going into the return match in the Netherlands next week. Should Palace progress to the semi-finals, they will face the winner of this tie with the second leg taking place at Selhurst Park.

Rayo Vallecano seized the initiative of their tie with AEK Athens in the early kick-off, with a dominant performance.

They got off to a dream start when lias Akhomach struck inside two minutes in front of a partisan home crowd.

It was 2-0 in first-half stoppage time when former Bilbao midfielder Unai Lopez reacted quickly after Thomas Strakosha saved Akhomach’s effort.

AEK Athens improved after the break but were unable to get themselves on the scoresheet.

And when a VAR review deemed there was a handball in the AEK penalty area, Isi Palazón converted to seal a 3-0 win for the La Liga side, leaving the Greeks with an uphill task in the second leg.

#### **Strasbourg with work to do**

One of the pre-season tournament favourites Strasbourg will now require a huge turnaround to reach the last four.

The French side suffered a bad night in Germany, going down 2-0 to Mainz 05. The Bundesliga outfit scored two stunning goals, the first coming from Kaishu Sano's curled 11th-minute effort, in off the post.

Austrian defender Stefan Posch then made it two inside the first twenty minutes for the hosts when side-footing home a volley from a corner.

Strasbourg did have chances to get back in the first leg, but can also had to count on goalkeeper Mike Penders to ensure are still in the tie. The Belgian stopper made a number of key saves, while Valentin Barco hit the crossbar at the other end.

It was the first time all season that Strasbourg have tasted defeat in the Conference League, ending their unbeaten European run at the 11th game.

Crystal Palace took a giant leap towards the semi-finals of the UEFA Conference League after a strong performance saw off Fiorentina 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

Palace in Europe: What else happened in Thursday’s quarter-finals?

Goals from Mateta, making his first start since January, Tyrick Mitchell and Ismaïla Sarr topped off a near perfect evening for the Eagles. 

If anything Palace could have had more, with substitute Yéremy Pino going close twice after coming on, as Oliver Glasner's team dominated their Serie A opponents.

Mateta set the team on their way by converting a 24th minute penalty and later completed a lap of honour applauding Selhurst Park after the game.

He told Palace TV: "I'm very happy and I'm very happy for the team as well. We did the job at home and now it's time to do the job away too.

"It was a fantastic performance from the team, from the lads, even from the people who came on. 

"It was a fantastic night and we're focused on Newcastle for the next game."

Max and Mateta reflect on a dominant performance

Despite having the advantage of taking a three-goal advantage to Florence for the return leg, Lacroix isn't losing focus on the task at hand.

"We are really happy about this first leg," the defender said. "I think the atmosphere in this game was unbelievable. Thank you to the fans. We did the job, but it's not finished. 

"We have a second leg in Florence. It will be a very tough game, but 3-0 is better than a draw.

"It's not finished. I know that this team likes to break records, so we'll go there to win."

French duo Maxence Lacroix and Jean-Philippe Mateta were left proud of a fantastic performance as the Eagles surged into a 3-0 aggregate lead following Thursday night's quarter-final first leg against Fiorentina.

He was the hero against Millwall in the Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory back in September and last month helped the Eagles navigate a testing night in Cyprus against AEK Larnaca in the UEFA Conference League.

With the Eagles back in Premier League against Newcastle on Sunday (14:00 BST), the Crystal Palace matchday programme sat down with goalkeeper Walter Benítez....

Your matchday programme: Benítez on first season in South London and international ambition

Delivering his pre-match press conference immediately after his post-match discussions following Thursday night's emphatic win in Europe, Glasner reiterated his belief that building on positive performances will be the best method of sustaining momentum in the season run-in.

The Manager was also asked for his early team news ahead of the Magpies' visit to South London, which included updates on **Evann Guessand**, **JP Mateta, Eddie Nketiah** and **Jørgen Strand Larsen**; his possible plans for any rotation; and his assessment of Newcastle United as an opponent.

**Read on below for the key talking points...**

This is how we want to go to Florence, with a good performance and a good result

#### **On early team news for the game…**

We have to assess **Evann Guessand**’s knee. He got a hit, and let's see – he could walk. He didn't limp when he left the game after the final whistle. 

Of course, we have to see how **JP Mateta**’s knee reacts, but therefore, **Jørgen Strand Larsen** comes back, and then **Christantus Uche** comes back, so we'll have two more attacking options, and that's good.

We are not planning to rotate massively, because I'm convinced the players are fresher now, and the best preparation for every single game is a good performance and a good result in the game before. 

This is how we want to go to Florence, with a good performance and a good result, and therefore we need fresh players, and, of course, a good performance.

#### **On Eddie Nketiah’s injury…**

For Eddie, unfortunately, it is the end of the season, so he won't return until the new season starts.

I didn't speak to him because he had a scan yesterday evening, and I think the doctor called me at nine in the evening when I watched the Champions League games. And I got this information, so it's brand new, and of course today it was preparing the team.

Of course tomorrow I will speak to him and then we'll decide what's best, because for him it's the same as with Cheick Doucouré, it’s getting stable, and now his deadline is not Newcastle or Florence, now his deadline should be when the new pre-season starts.

It’s so that he's in the best shape that he can really train the full pre-season, because that's what he deserves, what he needs: constant training, constant games to get back to match fitness, and we will support him.

#### **On how he plans to balance domestic and European football in the season run-in…**

We always decide the day before the game, or on a game day, how the players present, and I mentioned it, so we're always taking the blood, we see the objective parameter, how fatigued they are, and then talking to the players, and if they feel ready, then we start.

We had a good break, good recovery, and the players look fresh, but if I feel it's necessary to rotate six players, I will rotate six players, because we never risk any injuries.

It's just amazing how our defence is doing

#### **On five consecutive clean sheets at Selhurst Park…**

I'm very pleased with a clean sheet, like always. 

A clean sheet always starts with the attackers, because they are responsible either to put pressure on the ball or to bring the game into areas we are defining before. That's their responsibility, to close passing lines, and then we give the opposition some space where we want to give them it, and then we start with our pressing, and this always starts up front.

Then at the end, to be honest, it's just amazing how our defence is doing after we sold Marc [Guéhi] in January, and how quick Jaydee Canvot now came in, and also when Maxence Lacroix was injured, we played with Chadi Riad there, and when Dean Henderson was ill, it was Walter Benítez, and he could keep a clean sheet.

It's great to see that everybody knows how we want to defend, and everybody fulfils his part for the team.

#### **On Newcastle and Eddie Howe this season…**

I think Newcastle have struggled a little bit with injuries, also with the tight schedule. They played a great Champions League campaign, especially in the group stage, and then first in the knockout stage against Qarabaq, and then lost against Barcelona, which can happen. 

I expect them also to be fresher, to be honest. They had more than three weeks with no games. I think a few injured players will come back. They missed their captain, Bruno Guimarães, for a long time, so I think maybe he could be back. 

It's Eddie Howe's team, so they always play with one of the highest intensities in the Premier League, with so much pace.

I just saw a list, I think it was from the Champions League, among the top four was the highest-paced wingers, there were three Newcastle players: Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, and I think it was Jacob Murphy. This just shows the profiling they have, and we have to be ready for this. 

On the other side, I don’t know how it is but they had more than three weeks where they could prepare and also reset a little bit, because they conceded quite a few goals in the last games before the break, not just in the Barcelona game, but also in the league.

They often conceded two or three goals, and that's why if we are sharp, if we play our style, I'm pretty convinced that we will create two, three, four chances – and then it's being efficient and scoring from it and controlling their pace.

#### **On taking momentum forwards from Thursday night…**

For me it's the best preparation. 

We won't really train the next two days. With the players who didn't play, tomorrow there’ll be a light session, because of the runs they did now after the game, and the others will just recover, and then we will have a 30 or 35-minute session, maybe a little bit of tactics for how we expect Newcastle.

Then Sunday, 2 ‘o clock, we need to be sharp and we need to be ready. That's why this win, this performance, this great impact from the bench players, is maybe the best training we have ahead of the Newcastle game.
