Javier Alonso’s side travel to Old Trafford to face United in the FA Youth Cup semi-final on Friday (17th April), before taking them on again in the Premier League Cup Final at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, 22nd April.

With two huge fixtures against the same opponent in the space of five days – and silverware on the line – here’s a look at some of the players driving this run and ready to take centre stage.

### Lucca Benetton

**D.o.B.:** 8 August 2010 (aged 15)

Still only 15, Lucca Benetton has already established himself as one of the most exciting young goalkeepers in the country, becoming the Under-18s’ first-choice ‘keeper in the second half of the season.

He has made 12 appearances across league and cup, including starts in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final at Villa Park and both the Premier League Cup quarter-final and semi-final, keeping two clean sheets across those appearances.

He has also delivered standout performances in recent weeks, including an impressive display against Chelsea in league action.

His pathway has been anything but conventional. Originally an outfield player, he only committed fully to goalkeeping at Under-12 level, having previously split his time between defensive midfield and in goal while playing across grassroots sides including Windsor and Slough.

That grounding is evident in his composure in possession and comfort playing out from the back.

Since then, his progression has been rapid. He earned his first England call-up at Under-15 level and has since represented the country at Under-16 and Under-17 level, featuring in UEFA European Championship qualifying fixtures.

Notably, he was one of just two players promoted from the England Under-16s to the Under-17s squad, alongside Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel. He has also attended international camps with Italy, further underlining his recognition for the displays he is putting in for Palace between the sticks.

Benetton has also trained regularly with Palace’s first-team goalkeepers, gaining valuable exposure to senior standards at just 15.

### Dean Benamar

**D.o.B.:** 31 May 2008 (aged 17)

A very direct, confident and relentless left-footed full-back, Dean Benamar offers constant energy up and down the flank, combining defensive intensity with real attacking quality.

After making 20 appearances for the Under-18s in 2024/25, he stepped up to Under-21 level and has featured prominently this season, including in the Premier League International Cup against European opposition.

His progression was underlined by a senior debut in the UEFA Conference League against Finnish champions KuPS, where he started and played 60 minutes, before also being named in a Premier League matchday squad for the fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park.

At international level, Benamar has been heavily involved across England age groups. He scored directly from a corner against the Netherlands for the Under-17s, featured in every group game at the UEFA U17 European Championships, and more recently found the net as England Under-18s secured a 2–0 victory over Croatia.

One of his standout moments this season came in the 5-1 win over Liverpool. Inside seven minutes, George King spotted his run from deep and lifted a precise ball over the top. Benamar brought it down superbly before finishing on the half-volley past the advancing ‘keeper – a goal that showcased both his movement and technical quality.

Across Under-18s and Under-21s football this season, he has registered two goals and three assists.

### Charlie Walker-Smith

**D.o.B.:** 19 September 2007 (aged 18)

Charlie Walker-Smith has become a key figure at both ends of the pitch for the Under-18s and Under-21s this season.

Operating at centre-back, he has registered six goals and three assists – an outstanding return for a defender – with much of his threat coming from set-pieces and long throws, the latter he delivers himself.

His aerial presence has been decisive in recent weeks. He scored in the 5-1 win over Liverpool and added a brace against Southampton in the 3-1 victory, both coming from inswinging corner deliveries.

Beyond his goal threat, Walker-Smith’s ability to carry the ball out from defence and step into midfield has been central to Palace’s build-up play.

Internationally, he has stepped up to Wales Under-19s this season and is set to be an important figure for Chris Gunter’s side at the UEFA Under-19 European Championships in North Wales this summer.

He has also featured regularly for the Under-21s across Premier League 2 and the International Cup.

### Jasper Judd

**D.o.B.:** 16 November 2007 (aged 18)

Jasper Judd has led this group from the front throughout the campaign. A lifelong Palace fan who joined the club at the age of seven, he has started every match under Javier Alonso this season and captained the side throughout their league and cup runs.

His output from right-back has been significant – three goals and seven assists – with his inswinging corners proving one of the team’s most effective attacking weapons. His deliveries have led to goals in the FA Youth Cup against Newcastle and the decisive strike against Tottenham in the Premier League Cup semi-final.

Defensively, he has combined consistency with aggression, while his passing range allows him to contribute to build-up play from deep areas.

His performances have also earned him four appearances for the Under-21s this season, including starts in high-level fixtures across Premier League 2 and the Premier League International Cup, where he has handled the step up comfortably.

### Joel Drakes-Thomas

**D.o.B.:** 6 September 2009 (aged 16)

Joel Drakes-Thomas has produced a historic breakthrough season at just 16 years old.

He became Crystal Palace’s youngest-ever Premier League player at 16 years and 194 days, surpassing David Ozoh, and also featured in the UEFA Conference League against Finnish champions KuPS – becoming the youngest Englishman to play in the competition.

On his senior debut at Selhurst Park against KuPS, he was voted Player of the Match by supporters, underlining the impression he made.

At Academy level, he has featured across both Under-18s and Under-21s, often operating as an attacking wing-back. His pace and ability to isolate defenders in 1v1 situations make him a constant outlet.

Under-21s manager Darren Powell said: “Joel Drakes-Thomas was a real threat – isolating the full-back, getting 1v1s, delivering balls into the box, similar to what we saw against Wolves.”

After returning from injury in February, he played key roles in victories over Tottenham in the Premier League Cup and Aston Villa in the FA Youth Cup.

### David Angibeaud

**D.o.B.:** 23 November 2007 (aged 18)

Standing at 6ft 6in, David Angibeaud has become a focal point in Palace’s attack.

He has recorded 15 goals and four assists in 31 appearances this season and is the only player in the squad to feature in every match across all competitions.

His campaign turned following his goal against Fulham, sparking a run of 10 goals in 10 games as he established himself as a regular starter.

His physical presence allows him to dominate centre-backs, while his finishing – often powerful from distance or instinctive inside the box – makes him a consistent threat.

He has continued that form into the latter stages of the season, scoring against Reading, Fulham and Southampton to bring his tally to three goals in five, remaining a key figure heading into both fixtures.

### Benji Casey

**D.o.B.:** 4 February 2008 (aged 18)

Benji Casey has been one of the most prolific forwards in the Under-18 Premier League this season despite limited availability.

He has scored 18 goals and provided five assists in just 16 appearances across all competitions, including two hat-tricks, while maintaining a minutes-per-goal ratio of 70 – the best in the division.

In the league alone, he has featured just 10 times, making his position among the top scorers even more notable.

Casey has also stepped up to Under-21 level, scoring in the Premier League International Cup – including a composed finish against Juventus – and playing a key role in progression to the knockout stages, as well as netting in a 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

He also made his senior debut in European competition against Shelbourne FC, featuring in the closing stages of a 3-0 victory at Selhurst Park.

His pace in behind, sharp movement and clinical finishing make him one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition.

### **Getting to the VBS Community Stadium**

The VBS Community Stadium is easily accessible by both car and public transport.

The closest train station is West Sutton, which is just a short walk from the ground. Alternatively, you can take a train to Sutton station and enjoy a 20-minute walk down the high street to the stadium. If you’re travelling by bus, the 413 and 80 routes run close to the stadium.

For those driving, please note that the stadium car park is for permit holders only. We recommend parking at the Gibson Road municipal car park, which is about a 15-minute walk from the ground.

### **Can I watch from home?**

If you are unable to attend the VBS Community Stadium, you can still watch the game LIVE on YouTube, with a link to the stream being provided closer to kick-off.

It's set to be a dramatic final day in the Barclays Women's Super League 2, as Palace could seal promotion to the topflight at home to Portsmouth. Read below to see what will be on offer in Sutton...

What to expect from Palace Women v Portsmouth

Crystal Palace Women v Portsmouth Women (2026-05-02)

The result came after Palace had already secured their place in the PL2 play-offs prior to kick-off, thanks to results elsewhere. 

With qualification already confirmed, the focus for the home London derby against Arsenal was to collect three points and secure the best possible seeded position ahead of the knockout stages.

Speaking after the game, Gibbard said the message from the outset was clear.

“We knew what we needed to do from the start,” he said. “Get after them, get the three points and put ourselves in a good position for the play-offs.”

Gibbard set the tone early, breaking the deadlock inside four minutes after latching onto Harry Lee’s long goal kick and showing composure to lift the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper for his first goal of the 2025/26 campaign.

On scoring, he said: “Yeah, it was good. I’ve been getting a bit of stick from the lads for not scoring this season, so it was nice to get it done in the last game.”

Deployed at wing-back and in more defensive roles this season, Gibbard has shown his versatility, but believes a tactical shift has helped unlock more of his attacking threat.

“I think being able to play higher up the pitch brings that energy and that bit of bite out of me,” he said. “It allows me to get forward, join the attack, and contribute with goals and assists.”

The result ensured Palace finished the league phase on a high, building momentum ahead of the play-offs after already securing qualification last week.

For Gibbard, it was the ideal way to head into the knockout stage.

“It gives us loads of confidence,” he said. “We’ve shown we can beat anyone, like we did against Liverpool. Whoever we get in the play-offs, we know if we play our way, we can win.”

Reflecting on the difference between this performance and the recent 2–0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in PL2, he pointed to mentality as the key factor.

“I think it was our mentality and our desire to get after them,” he said. “Sometimes we turn up more for the big games, which is something we need to fix going into the play-offs because you can get anyone.”

Palace currently sit 10th in PL2 on 31 points, meaning they will face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the knockout stage due to seeding positions, with confirmation due on 17th April once all teams have completed their 20 games.

“It’s what you want really,” Gibbard added. “To play the big clubs, hopefully knock them out, and then take on whoever comes next.”

Under-21s midfielder Joe Gibbard reflected on a dream night after opening the scoring in Crystal Palace’s convincing 2–0 win over Arsenal in their final Premier League 2 league phase fixture on Monday evening at the VBS Community Stadium.

With Palace leading 3-0 from last week, the second leg will kick-off at **21:00 CET local time (20:00 BST)** on Thursday at the **Artemio Franchi Stadium** in Florence**.**

Ahead of Thursday, supporters can find important information surrounding the trip below.

### Ticketing information

**Tickets are being issued to each individual ticket holder via PDF print at home ticket**.**** All emails will be sent direct from Fiorentina.

If you have you haven’t received your ticket by 09:00 on Thursday, please contact the box office as soon as possible. Please remember to check your spam/junk folders before calling the box office.

Each ticket will include – **as listed on each supporter’s passport** – the purchaser’s name, date of birth, passport country of issue, and gender. All of these details are required by Italian law in order to obtain a ticket.

Please note that supporters can scan tickets on their phones by displaying the QR/barcode. There is no requirement to print out your tickets.

### Where to go on matchday…

On matchday, Palace supporters are expected to meet at **Giardini** **Piazza della Indipendenza** in central Florence.

**Local authorities have organised coaches** to take supporters from this point to the Artemio Franchi Stadium.  The first service will depart between **18:00** and **18:30** local time, depending on demand.

From then on, there will be regular shuttles from **Piazza della Indipendenza** to the ground. Please note that availability for this service is limited, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

**If supporters choose to walk** to the Artemio Franchi Stadium, please note that this will take around 45 minutes from Piazza della Indipendenza.

### Mandatory passport checks

**All supporters will be required to take their passports to the stadium.**

**There will be strict stadium perimeter ticket checks**, where all supporters will be required to show the passport which matches the details on their ticket.

Supporters who do not have their own passports at the ticket checkpoint will be refused entry to the stadium perimeter. 

If the supporter’s passport does not match the details on their ticket, they will be refused entry to the stadium perimeter.

Palace staff will be on hand at the check point to help with any potential issues.

### Approaching the stadium

**Palace supporters must approach through** **Viale** **Pasquale Paoli** on the south-eastern side of the stadium, where there will be a ticketing and passport checkpoint.

Seventeen-year-old Leon McKenzie was standing at the Kop end of Anfield in the spring of 1996, preparing for one of the biggest matches of his young career: a FA Youth Cup semi-final against a Liverpool side brimming with future stars.

For McKenzie, now a mentor at Palace’s Academy, the memories of that tie remain vivid more than 30 years later.

“Back then, it was Liverpool, Wimbledon, and a few others – obviously United too – but Liverpool were on another level,” he recalls.

“They had Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard… and the first-leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final, we went to Anfield. Massive. I remember just thinking, yeah, this is great. You watch all the Liverpool players touch the badge as they walk out, and you think, okay, wow.”

McKenzie's focus was immediately drawn to one player in particular. “There was a massive noise around a wonderkid called Michael Owen. He was playing about two years up.

"We were just trying to keep him quiet. But he scored the first goal, around 15 or 16 minutes in, and then I ended up scoring at the Kop end to make it 1-1. I thought, right, it’s on – we’re in this tie and we’ve got a chance here.”

Despite McKenzie’s goal, the young Eagles went on to lose 4–2, and he then missed the second leg at Selhurst Park through injury  – a 3–3 draw that confirmed Liverpool’s 7–5 aggregate victory.

“Sometimes someone very special comes along and delivers in a way you can’t get in the way of, and Michael Owen was that.”

The FA Youth Cup remains the pinnacle of youth football in England, and Mckenzie sees why it holds such prestige. “It’s the real deal, as close as you’re going to play against the best. 

"If you get to the final and you play well, come together as a team, and come out victorious, then it’s history. Something that can never be taken away,” he says.

“Even getting to the semis and finals is an achievement in itself. It’s a competition every kid wants to be involved with.”

Following his rapid rise through the Palace Academy ranks, Mckenzie made his first-team debut at 17 during the 1996/97 season.

Over an 18-year playing career, he made over 400 senior appearances across seven clubs, including a season in the Premier League with Norwich City, where he formed a potent partnership with Dean Ashton and scored seven top-flight goals.

After retiring from football, he embarked on a career in professional boxing, winning eight of 11 bouts before retiring in 2017.

Today, Mckenzie brings that experience to the Academy. 

“I mentor the academy, now in my fourth season, giving the boys a different kind of support,” he explains. 

“I’m not a coach; I don’t work for the club in that sense. I build relationships, get to know the players more than most, provide a different outlet, a support element. Emotional thoughts, feelings – all these things come into it.”

It’s not just turning up and playing the Youth Cup semi-final

He emphasises that his role is about helping young players cope with the realities of elite sport. “Players will reach out for many things, whether it’s about the game or how they’re feeling in general. With my experiences in football and boxing, I wish I’d had someone like me.

Whether they’re signing contracts, breaking into the first team, not playing, or dealing with injuries, I try to help them cope with challenges. That’s my job – to level that off.”

Mckenzie also stresses the importance of preparation and habits in shaping young players, particularly ahead of a huge Youth Cup tie. “It’s not just turning up and playing the Youth Cup semi-final. It’s knowing what you’ve done every day to prepare.

When you’ve done everything to get to this moment, you can’t fail in terms of preparation. You have to deliver everything you’ve been doing day in, day out. If you’re not focused, it will bite you against teams like Man United, Liverpool, or Man City.”

Now, nearly three decades later, Palace’s U18s have reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final stage once more, this time against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Friday, 17th April (19:00 BST).

The young Eagles booked their place in dramatic fashion, as Chuks Okoli’s last-gasp winner sealed a 3-2 comeback over five-time Youth Cup winners – and 2024/25 treble winners – Aston Villa at Villa Park.

“I watched the Aston Villa game; it was amazing,” said Mckenzie. “We should have lost that game with the chances they had. Raihaan Anderson scores an unbelievable goal, my guy Chuks comes in, and the rest is history.

"It creates a different kind of camaraderie, a different atmosphere. They think, oh, actually, we can do this. I’m excited for them, but again, it’s about enjoying it and taking that chance.”

U18 Highlights: FA Youth Cup | Aston Villa 2-3 Crystal Palace

Darren Fletcher’s United side arrive in strong form, having won 12 consecutive matches in 2026 and demonstrating their pedigree with victories over Peterborough United, Derby County, Oxford United, and Sunderland. They are the most successful club in Youth Cup history, lifting the trophy 11 times.

For Palace, this marks their first FA Youth Cup semi-final appearance since 1997  –  nearly 30 years after McKenzie's own Youth Cup journey in 1995/96. That 1997 side, featuring Clinton Morrison, Wayne Carlisle, and Hayden Mullins, overcame Blackburn Rovers 4-3 on aggregate to reach the final.

Should the current Eagles progress, they will face Manchester City, who overcame Blackburn Rovers 4–1 on Friday in the other semi-final of the Youth Cup.

Reflecting on the ties to his own experiences, McKenzie urges the current crop to embrace the occasion. “Enjoy what this is; it doesn’t come around all the time. Anything can happen if you’re prepared and as a team you’ve prepared.

"Compete – even if the other team has technically better players, you always have a chance. That’s the beauty of the Youth Cup.”

From his own Youth Cup journey to mentoring the next generation, McKenzie's story is all about his love for the game. As Palace’s U18s step onto one of football’s biggest stages, they’re chasing history – a trophy the club last won the year Leon was born, back in 1978.

Oliver Glasner’s Eagles were written off by many pundits before travelling to Merseyside, as Jürgen Klopp’s side aimed to keep up the pressure at the top of the Premier League table.

But the Eagles scored early through Eze and dominated large parts of the match, harrying and hassling Liverpool in possession throughout, prompting errors not often seen from a Klopp side, and surviving the second-half to earn a deserved three points.

Glasner’s side were duly recognised by the League Managers’ Association for their display, being awarded the Utilita Performance of the Week award.

And Eze’s strike itself would later be voted your [2023/24 Goal of the Season](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/ebere-eze-liverpool-crystal-palace-goal-of-the-season-2023-2024/), arriving at the culmination of 21 slick passes, when Adam Wharton found Michael Olise, who slid Tyrick Mitchell in behind. It was the perfect team goal, famously prompting an inaudible “wow” from Klopp in the home dugout.

Charlie Walker-Smith’s brace inspired Palace U18s to a 3–1 comeback win over Southampton in the U18 Premier League South last time out, getting the young Eagles back to winning ways at Staplewood.

That followed a narrow 2–0 defeat away at Chelsea over the Easter weekend, which ended a six-match unbeaten run across league and cup. The matchday squad included eight U16 players alongside three first-year scholars, reflecting the continued pathway integration within the academy setup.

U21 regulars Walker-Smith and Benji Casey were also involved due to a lighter fixture schedule, bringing added experience to a notably youthful side.

With a decisive run-in ahead – the FA Youth Cup semi-final on Friday and the Premier League Cup Final at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, 22nd April – momentum is key. Palace remain third in the U18 Premier League South, above local rivals Brighton & Hove Albion on 39 points.

Several key U18s, including Walker-Smith, Dean Benamar, Joel Drakes-Thomas and Casey, have also featured for the U21s this season and are expected to return fully to the U18s fold for the major end-of-season fixtures.

### Palace’s FAYC Story So Far…

Palace’s journey began at Selhurst Park on a wet December evening with a 3–0 win over Category Three Bradford City. After dominating possession, the breakthrough came when Drakes-Thomas won a penalty, converted by Casey. Stuart Oduro then struck twice from off the bench to seal the win.

In the Fourth Round at Newcastle, Palace impressed again. David Angibeaud opened the scoring before Casey doubled the lead. Despite a Newcastle response, a superb Jack Mason save kept Palace ahead before Angibeaud added a second and Casey also struck again to secure a 4–0 win.

A tougher test followed against high-flying Category Three side Stevenage, where Palace led 2–0 through Oduro and an own goal forced by Casey. Stevenage pulled one back, but Palace held firm for a 2–1 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

In the last eight, Palace produced a dramatic comeback to beat holders Aston Villa 3–2. After falling behind early, Casey levelled before Villa regained the lead from the spot. A sensational curling effort from Raihaan Anderson and a stoppage-time winner from Chuks Okoli sent Palace into the semi-finals for the first time in nearly three decades.

### Palace’s proud FA Youth Cup legacy

Since its introduction in the 1952/53 season, the FA Youth Cup has remained one of the most prestigious competitions in English youth football.

The tournament mirrors the structure of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, with clubs across the football pyramid entering qualifying rounds before the professional academies join.

Palace famously lifted the trophy in back-to-back seasons in 1977 and 1978.

That golden generation featured the likes of Vince Hilaire, Kenny Sansom and Terry Fenwick – players who would later form the backbone of the club’s famous ‘Team of the Eighties’.

### Our Opponents – Manchester United

Manchester United Under-18s are enjoying a strong first season under Darren Fletcher, sitting top of the U18 Premier League North on 50 points, ahead of Manchester City, who have two games in hand.

The U18 league is split into North and South divisions, with clubs playing home and away within their region. The winners of each are crowned regional champions.

United are also into the Premier League Cup final, which will be played at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, 22nd April.

In the FA Youth Cup, they have beaten Peterborough United (1–0), Derby County (2–1), Oxford United (4–1) and Sunderland (3–2). They enter this tie on a 13-game winning streak across all competitions.

Their last outing saw a 2–0 win over Leeds, with McEvoy and Gabriel both on the scoresheet as United maintained their dominance in the North.

### Manchester United & the FA Youth Cup

United are the most successful club in FA Youth Cup history with 11 titles, including a record-breaking run in the 1950s.

Their early dominance came through the legendary “Busby Babes” era under Jimmy Murphy, featuring Duncan Edwards and Eddie Colman. United won five consecutive titles from 1953 to 1957, setting the standard for youth football in England.

In 1964, George Best inspired another triumph, alongside David Sadler, as United defeated Manchester City in a memorable semi-final and went on to win the trophy.

The next golden generation arrived in the 1990s. The Class of ’92 – including David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Gary Neville – famously beat Palace in the 1992 final before dominating English football at senior level.

More recent successes followed in 2003, 2011 and 2022, with players such as Paul Scholes, Jesse Lingard, Ravel Morrison and Alejandro Garnacho all featuring in title-winning squads.

Cameron Byrne-Hughes is expected to continue in goal after being United’s preferred FA Youth Cup ‘keeper. The back four remains largely settled, with Jacob Watson an alternative to Dan Armer.

Rafe McCormack and Jim Thwaites form the established midfield pivot, while Gabriel operates as the central creative force behind the wide duo of Nathaniel Junior Brown and Noah Ajayi. Chido Obi is expected to return to lead the line after rotation in the league.

United arrive in outstanding form, unbeaten in 13 consecutive matches. Across their last 15 games, they have conceded just 12 goals while maintaining the best defensive record in the U18 Premier League North.

### Key Players – JJ Gabriel & Chido Obi

JJ Gabriel has been one of the standout players in youth football this season, cementing his status as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects. The 15-year-old has registered 20 goals and five assists for Manchester United’s U18s across all competitions, while also leading the U18 Premier League scoring charts.

Operating mainly as a free attacking midfielder, Gabriel is central to United’s creativity in the final third. He regularly drops between the lines to dictate play, while also carrying the ball aggressively at defences. He has also added key goals in the FA Youth Cup, reinforcing his ability to deliver in high-pressure knockout games.

Alongside him, Chido Obi provides the physical focal point in attack. The striker has scored 15 goals this season across all youth competitions, including important strikes in the FA Youth Cup during the latter stages of the run.

Obi’s game is built on power, intelligent movement and sharp penalty-box instincts, offering a contrasting threat to Gabriel’s creativity. He has also already been exposed to senior football environments this season after being fast-tracked into first-team contention before returning to academy level for further development.

Together, Gabriel and Obi form the core of United’s attacking threat: one the creator between the lines, the other the finisher in the box. Their partnership has been a key factor in United’s 13-game winning streak and will be central to their ambitions at Old Trafford.

### The Gaffer – Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher, a Manchester United legend with over 340 appearances for the club, now leads the U18s as part of his progression into senior management.

A product of United’s academy himself, Fletcher came through the same pathway he now oversees, graduating from the youth ranks before becoming a key first-team player under Sir Alex Ferguson.

During his playing career, he won multiple major honours, including the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, and was known for his tactical intelligence, discipline and leadership in midfield.

Since returning to Old Trafford in 2020, Fletcher has taken on a series of coaching and development roles across the academy and first-team environment, steadily building experience as part of his long-term ambition to become a manager.

Crystal Palace Under-18s are preparing for their first FA Youth Cup semi-final in nearly 30 years as they face 11-time winners and competition record holders Manchester United on Friday (17 April, 19:00 BST) at Old Trafford. Here is everything you need to know.

At the tie's halfway mark, following an eye-catching Palace display in the first leg at a raucous Selhurst Park, the Eagles lead *La Viola* 3-0 – a performance full of hard work, courage and flair, all attributes which would have made serial trophy winner Lombardo proud.

Back in the summer of 1997, with some hailing the former Juventus and Sampdoria attacker as the club’s most exciting transfer ever, the Italian did not disappoint, scoring on his debut against Everton – a 2-1 win at Goodison Park on the opening day of the 1997/98 season.

In what eventually proved a topsy-turvy season back in the Premier League, Lombardo shone, even taking the reins for a short spell as player-manager at the end of the season.

He could not prevent relegation but – further cementing his bond with the Palace faithful – he played for a further half-a-season in the second tier before departing.

These days, the former *Azzurri* international is currently working in a managerial capacity back in his homeland with another of his former clubs – Sampdoria – but was happy to catch up with Palace ahead of the first leg last week...

I certainly didn't expect to receive all this warmth; I was surprised by it

**When you first joined Crystal Palace it was labelled by many fans as the club’s most exciting transfer ever. How did the transfer come about – and did that bring any extra pressure?** 

At Juventus, I had completed my cycle. I had two options: Real Zaragoza in Spain and Crystal Palace in England. 

Given the club's history, English football, and the presence of [Gianluca] Vialli, [Gianfranco] Zola, and so many other Italians in the league, I chose Palace and the competition that excited me the most. 

I wouldn't say it brought pressure. I certainly didn't expect to receive all this warmth; I was surprised by it. 

I think it only took a moment to ignite a positive spark in the heart that beats at that club: I made my debut with a goal and a penalty awarded against Everton. This made my experience even easier.

**How did you adapt to English football? Did it take you time to settle in at all?**

I adapted immediately, most likely due to my characteristics, because I was a footballer who ran. And once you run, and you put your heart and soul into it, I think any fan will welcome you with enthusiasm. 

The language was difficult at first. An Italian guy who lived in London helped me with the translations, but I was also welcomed by everyone in the locker room. 

I had made friends in particular with [Bruce] Dyer, [Dean] Gordon, and many others: they gave me that extra push to thrive at Palace.

**Is there a particular performance or goal in a Palace shirt that stands out most to you? Many still talk about your goal in the win over Newcastle at St James' Park?**

That is a wonderful memory. Winning at Newcastle wasn't easy for anyone, and besides, we were playing against one of the best teams of that era.

The first match against Everton I mentioned before, and I won't forget the winning goal in the home derby against Wimbledon!

**When you had the spell in charge as player-manager – how did you feel when you were first offered the role and how did you balance both roles?** 

It was a wonderful experience, which came a bit unexpectedly. 

I didn't have much time to decide, but I only made the decision after speaking with Vialli, who had done the same at Chelsea at the time. He explained to me what I was getting into, that my life would change completely but that it would be a positive experience. 

And so it was. Of course, we had very little chance of staying up, with a truly difficult schedule, but I saw it as an opportunity for personal growth, especially for the future. It taught me to respect and be respected, to judge and be judged, but in a different way, from the opposite side. 

I won't deny that there were some difficulties in this regard: from the very first match, I was on the bench and not in the starting eleven. My instinct was to take on more responsibility as a coach, then I realised that the boys needed me on the pitch too. 

But every experience teaches you something.

**Did that time as player-manager help you know that you wanted to eventually pursue a coaching career?**

Yes, I understood that this was my path. Once my playing career was over, I personally coached in the Sampdoria youth academy and at lower teams, then Mancini called me to join his staff, and there I had to choose. 

I couldn't say no, and I think I made the right choice!

Playing for Crystal Palace will forever be one of the best experiences of my life

**In 2005, you were voted into a Crystal Palace centenary XI. How did it feel to have that recognition from the fans, and what does the club mean to you?** 

It's total recognition from people who live for football: an Italian player making the best eleven of an English club truly is a proud reward, perhaps even more so than a victory on the pitch. 

Playing for Crystal Palace will forever be one of the best experiences of my life. 

I still follow the club’s results of course. I think they've done very well in recent years. 

I'm happy with their FA Cup triumph and their form this season. I remember that in my day, and for a few years, Palace were a "yo-yo team”, relegated and then rebounding, almost cyclically. 

Today, that's no longer the case: they're working really hard, and through their hard work, they're getting some well-deserved satisfaction.

**What do you make of Palace’s quarter-final matchup against Fiorentina?** 

It will be a genuinely fascinating match for both teams. Selhurst Park is a stadium that exudes special emotion, and it will be wonderful experience for Fiorentina to play there. 

For Palace, it will be a great test: it's always difficult to face an Italian team in Europe. 

It’s a tough match to predict!
